I think that the 1 series has its own niche, as it appeals to a certain demographic. Yes, there will be a LOT of young folks out there driving the 1, mostly because it's the least expensive BMW in the lineup....stripped, of course, it IS a BMW, is not a 4 door, has the same engine, etc. as the 3 series and weighs less, and they can't afford or don't want an M3. Similarly, there are those like myself, who wanted a cute, (yes, I said, "Cute!"), fast, summer car which is fun to drive, and of course there are the older folks/empty nesters who don't need 4 doors, have had the Porches and Lotuses, and now need something a little different, but fun.

That having been said, I think it'll be more likely to be competition for the Mini Cooper in the size and fun factors....unless you also consider gas prices, which then would put the Mini waaaay ahead.
