Sport Package also came with Sports seats which is a big item. They include the following:
• Differentiated backrest contours. The backrests have prominent side bolsters near the bottom, then a narrower upper backrest section. The
idea is to provide the desired lateral support, but without possible constriction around the shoulders.
• Flared cushion side bolsters, for additional lateral support.
• Adjustable thigh support, via a movable front cushion segment.

3.0i Sport Package

Sport Packages are a popular
BMW tradition; this one endows
the senior BMW SAV with serious
sporting capabilities. It includes:
• Sport suspension – following
the established BMW philosophy,
with firmer springs, shock
absorbers and anti-roll (stabilizer)
bars for even crisper
response and “flatter”
cornering, at an acceptable
compromise in riding comfort
and bad-road capability.
• Power sport seats, as
described in BMW SAV
features, pages 30-31. 8-way
power plus manual (2-way)
thigh-support adjustment.
• 18-in. wheels and tires. With
17-in. equipment standard on
the 3.0i, the Sport Package
enhances road handling and
appearance, and brings it in
line with the 4.4i’s standard
wheels/tire equipment (though
with a different wheel design).
The wheels are 18 x 8.5 in Y
Spoke design (#131) and carry
H-rated 255/55R-18 all-season
tires.
• Titanium-finish bumper
grilles, a subtle and attractive
enhancement.
• High-gloss Shadowline
exterior trim around the side
windows, replacing the
standard matte-black trim.
• Black Chrome exhaust tips.
• Sport steering wheel.
• Anthracite-color headliner.

4.4i Sport Package
In its suspension, exterior and
interior features, this V-8 model’s
Sport Package is almost identical
to that of the 3.0i, but its wheeland-
tire equipment differs. The
contents are:
• Sport suspension as described
for the 3.0i Package.
• Distinctive wheels with V-rated
tires. Though the wheels and
tires are the same size as the
standard 4.4i equipment, the
wheels are of a different
design (Star Spoke #74) and
the tires are V-rated but still
all-season for good winter and
poor-weather traction.
• Maximum-speed limiter
deleted. This increases the
top speed from an electronically
limited 128 mph to the
4.4i’s full capability of 149 mph.
• Titanium-finish bumper
grilles, a subtle and attractive
enhancement.
• High-gloss Shadowline
exterior trim around the side
windows, replacing the standard
combination of chrome
and black.
• Black Chrome exhaust tips
• Sport steering wheel.
• Power sport seats.
• Anthracite-color headliner

FRONT BUMPER MESH SCREEN
wide lower and split upper
air intakes are in mesh screen,
which is black on the 3.0i and
4.4i but in Titanium-finish when
these models have the Sport
Package.

Wheels and tires
• 3.0i Sport Package – 18 x 8.5
wheels in new Y Spoke design
(#131), with 255/55R-18
H-rated all-season tires

• 4.4i Sport Package – same
dimensions as the standard
equipment, but with V-rated
all-season tires; the Star
Spoke design (#74) continues
for ’04. (With these V-rated
tires, the electronic speed
limiter is deleted and top
speed is149 mph vs. the
standard 130 mph.)

4.4i optional – available in
combination with the Sport
Package, this option includes
19 x 9.0 front/19 x 10.0 rear
wheels in a new Star Spoke
design (#132), with V-rated
performance tires sized
255/50R-19 front / 285/45R-
19 rear 1.

Lamps and markers
For ‘04, all X5 models have clear
or “white” turn-signal and sidemarker
lenses, their lamps providing
the functional color only when
in use; these were already standard
on the previous 4.6is model
and included in the 3.0i/4.4i Sport
Packages. (Per regulations, the
front reflectors are in amber.)

Exterior Trim
Side-window framing varies
according to model and equipment,
as follows:
3.0i – standard matte black,
Sport Package high-gloss
Shadowline black
4.4i – standard matte black +
chrome, Sport Package highgloss
Shadowline black
4.8is – standard high-gloss Satin
Chrome (dark in color).

As at the front, the bumper’s
face is divided into body-color
and matte-black portions. On
3.0i and 4.4i models, the matteblack
section is at the bottom
and includes openings for the
round exhaust tips (two on 3.0i,
four on 4.4i; in Black Chrome on
Sport Package-equipped models).
On the 4.8is, a matte-black
center section frames two large
oval exhaust finishers, each
surrounding dual pipes; in turn
this is set off by a segmented
body-color lower air diffusor with
wind splitters at its sides.

Front seats and memory system
8-way power/2-way manual
sport seats (3.0i/4.4i Sport
Package);

Adjustable ride height
(optional 3.0i & 4.4i, requires
Sport Package; standard 4.8is)
The 3.0i option includes the
self-leveling rear suspension and
adjustable ride height; as selfleveling
rear air suspension is
standard on the 4.4i, the option
for that model is for adjustable
ride height only and is therefore
priced lower. The full system
with adjustable ride height is
standard on the 4.8is.
With this system, air springs are
the springing medium at all four
wheels. Their self-leveling effect
at the rear is as described under
self-leveling rear air suspension,
above.
Adjustable ride height allows
the driver to select any of three
ride heights for the entire vehicle.
Via a dash switch to the left of
the steering column, the height
can be set to –
• Normal
• Offroad (25 mm/1.0 in. higher
than normal) for increased
ground clearance
• Access (35 mm/1.4 in. lower
than normal) for greater ease
of entry and exit.
The offroad setting can be used
at speeds up to approximately
31 mph, at which speed the
vehicle automatically returns to
the normal setting if offroad has
been selected. The access
setting remains effective until the
vehicle reaches approximately
22 mph, or can be engaged if
the vehicle is traveling approximately
16 mph or less.
All adjustments occur steplessly,
and the pneumatics are controlled
to effect an essentially
even raising or lowering at all
four wheels – although under
some conditions of loading one
end of the vehicle may move
slightly more quickly than the
other. If the front or rear moves
more quickly, the control system
will stop motion there until the
other end catches up. Three
LEDs indicate the system’s current
state: A steadily illuminating
LED indicates that a particular
level has been reached; a blinking
LED indicates that a level has
been selected and the system is
adjusting.
If height adjustment is attempted
while a trailer is attached to the
vehicle, the following occurs:
• If already at normal height, the
vehicle cannot be raised or
lowered.
• If at one of the other settings
and the vehicle is at a standstill,
the driver can return the
vehicle to normal height, after
which it cannot be raised or
lowered.
• If the vehicle begins moving at
one of the other settings, it will
automatically return to the
normal height at 22 mph (if in
access) or 31 mph (if in
offroad).
