The tall hood is almost a necessity to meet the Euro-NCAP pedestrian safety requirements. There needs to be sufficient space between the hood/bonnet and the components underneath, and enough height so your legs don't get broken. A lot of European cars have the ungainly high hood now, and the alternative design would be like the Honda Civic, which we know is ugly but also scores well in pedestrian safety.
