You need to narrow down whether the noise is at the steering wheel, in the column, or closer to the steering rack.

The one I remember sounded like two pieces of plastic rubbing, and it was right at the wheel.

If it is right at the wheel, there is a slip ring that caused problems on early models. For that, you have to take the steering wheel off, and you are looking for a plastic ring that is rubbing. Some lube can help.

If it is in the column, it can be a bushing, or the pinch bolt near the firewall (from another post, I haven't worked on that component myself).

If it is lower down, it can be the rack, either a problem with fluid (resolved by topping off the fluid in the reservoir) or with the rack itself.
