Winter Tires: To Buy or Not to Buy?

Here's an excellent article about Winter Tires by Shawn Molnar on BMWBLOG. He also has some tire recommendations.

I wouldn't consider, with the "spirited driving" that I like to do, driving in the winter without winter tires.

If you have high performance summer tires, you NEED a winter setup. The summer tires are not made for winter temperatures and get hard as rocks and become ice skates.

Second that and All-seasons are useless in cold temps as well.

When lived in New York I was a firm believer in summer/winter rubber. Now I just use them as lawn decorations here in Florida.

I live in Qc and I would not drive my X5 in winter without winter tire, for the last 2 winters I have been running on Dunlop 255/55/18 and those are quite fine and I drive in heavy snow. Here it's mandatory by law to have winter tire, no more crappy 4 seasons tire is allowed. In southern state there is no need for winter tire.
