knocking / ticking noise

Hi

Just noticed a noise on cold start of my 3.0D UK 2006 model 95,000 miles.

It seems to be coming from the bottom left side of engine bay (If sitting in X5). Its not a loud noise more of a whoosh with a tick. It happens immediately on cold start up and if you sit on idle and slowly rev up it quickens and then disapears. Once the X5 is warm you cannot hear it.

Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

Im no mechanic but of personal experience that sounds like the oil lifters. most if not all BMW's end up with oil lifter noise, from what i understand it does not affect the engine in any way, just that annoying sound when u first turn it on.

All diesel X's have a Webasto diesel powered coolant heater mounted on the left side of the engine bay as seen from the driver's seat. This unit fires up if the air temp falls below 5C. It sounds like a steady 'tick' and then a quiet whoosh as the unit runs up. Look for a miniature exhaust under the passenger seat and a large unit under the bonnet. The heater is marked 'Thermo Top' and a letter. As you're looking into the engine bay, it's mounted on the RHS. Big grey boxy unit with a black top.

This ticking is 100% normal and part of the engine's fast warm up system which brings the coolant and A/C loop up to temp faster. Once the temp has been reached then the system shuts down again.

This unit surprises a lot of new owners in their first winter. Nothing to worry about. Petrol units don't have it in the UK due to the risk of fire. There is a way of setting it up to run up before you get in the car and make it nice and toasty inside. There's a big discussion on how to do it on xdrivers.co.uk at present.

Hi

thanks for replys so far. I know about webasto pre heater and I've heard that kicking in and running ok.

Suppose just concerned its not a problem, def do not want to have a costly repair by not catching something early.

BTW just had oil service using 5w 30 fully synthetic and filter from dealership before I noticed noise, now I hear it. Maybe just being paranoid, hearing noises that are not there
