2004 had the GM 5L40E according to my source, same as the X5 six cylinder. 2007 models went to the ZF 6 speed I believe, but a smaller ZF than the one used in the X5 8 cylinder models.

Agree, GM 6 speed automatic. Good catch.

I think the confusion came from the 6 speed manual being a ZF.

i have never seen a ZF transmission on an E83. they have been GM5 and GM6 speed transmissions. both terrible transmissions.

The GM5 isn't bad in my opinion. Responsive, smooth, and capable of holding its own (thanks to good programming) when pushed hard.

Since I have one, what's terrible about it? Other than the dealer wanting over $600. US for a fluid and filter change.
