08 Auto not changing down consistently

I just noticed today the auto in our 08 X3 is acting a little erratically.

I first notice on a long hill climb on the freeway with the cruise on. Rather than down shift to maintain speed, the car just lost momentum and speed. I manually changed down and accelerated away nicely, then flicked it back to auto mode and the car stayed in the correct gear for the climb and continued on its way on the cruise control.

I then noticed once i got off the freeway that if i didn't aggressively accelerate, the car wouldn't change gear down when required.

if I change manually, the gears are selected fine and all feels ok.

any ideas?

The car is a 2,0l diesel with 126000km, and just had the major service 2 at BMW two weeks ago.

thanks

terry

No specific ideas yet, but some questions.

Is it still under warranty? Not sure what your warranty terms are in Australia.

What did the dealer do when they completed the major service? Did they touch the transmission?

Suggest you keep a simple log of the issues, noting what is happening, and when, in preparation for a discussion with the repair facility.

The warranty is 3 years, unlimited kms. So its still covered until August.

I live 2 hours from the dealer so I was thinking i could have a look at it myself if I could work out if it was something easy like fluid issues or vacuum etc.

There was nothing on the service record saying they had touched the gear box.

Good idea on the log, I'll do that.

thanks, JCL.

I would call and ask them if they touched the gearbox. They might have checked fluid, changed the level. They could have updated transmission software.

You can check fluid level. The transmission needs to be at temperature, engine running.

I would keep the log, and ensure that the problem is noted by the dealer on a work order prior to the warranty expiring. Worst case, if it fails after the warranty expires, you will have a history and so can claim it as a failure during the warranty period.

Good luck with it.

Try an AT reset. Will either work or not . . yours is newer than mine.
Turn ignition key to second position (just before start - all lights on etc but NOT cranking). Put foot flat to floor on accelerator pedal and hold for 25 seconds (the engine is NOT running at this point so safe). Release the foot. Start the car.
This will remove the "learned" memory of the tranny and put it back to learning mode again.
If this works you will notice an immediate change in the way the AT behaves. The AT (well 2006 and 2007 vintage 6 speed AT) tends to learn / adapt itself into stupidity over time.

I agree that the transmission adaptations can make a difference, but assume for a moment that there is no problem, only the adaptations have changed. If he liked the shifting characteristics before the service, and not after, then it is most likely that the adaptations were reset during the reprogramming. That is to say, that resetting it again will move it further away from where he wants it (with learned characteristics matching where it was before the reprogramming).

Yes I agree but I have learn that the dealer reset is different to the reset I have described.
I have had the dealer reset mine due to erratic behavior but did not fix issues I was having. Doing the simple trick did fix all my issues. I have to do it occasionally when I notice weirdness again like hanging on to first gear way too long (should change at approx 1700 RPM not 3500 RPM) on gentle acceleration.
