Right rear drain leak: '04 X3
I used to have a clogged front sunroof drain tube. I simply located the tube at the bottom of the car by pouring water into the sunroof channel on the top. There was was crud that simply came out when I removed the star shaped rubber cap at the end of the tube.
Now I have a clogged drain tube at the right rear end! I can see the tube from inside the compartment by taking off the trim panel above the indented 'bowl' on the load floor. But there is isn't anything I can do to the tube. I also am unable to locate where exaclty above the bumper this drain tube exits. Please let me know if anyone has had a clogged rear sunroof drain tube, and if so what you did to clear it up. Should be a simple thing once you know what to do. I'd rather not take it into the stealership for this. 108K miles, out of warranty. |

I took a chance and pulled out the end of the right rear tube where it exits out from the inside compartment. It is basically a tight pressure fit from a large built-in rubber washer on the tube. I blew some air by mouth from the end of the tube towards the sunroof end and had someone stand up near the sunroof and hear for the blowing noise. They could hear it fine. Then I poured some water into the sunroof channel area and lo and behold the water was coming out just fine. So either the small blockage has already cleared up, or the blockage is between the car compartment and the final exit point for the water. I'll find out soon enough when it rains. I suppose if someone has compressed air they can just blow through the hole from the inside.
This is the third time the same sunroof drain tube has been blocked. The first two times the dealer was generous enough (or under warranty) to do it for free. I can't see myself paying anyone more than $25 for this job. Also, from my perspective, this is a manufacturing design flaw, yes, and a nuisance to deal with, yes; but the sheer performance, driving pleasure and otherwise well built nature of the car outweigh this annoyance. No serious problems with the car till now (108K, '04 3.0). Wonder what the highest mileage 'X3 is among the members.... |
