That fancy redesigned fan and fan clutch.......

I noticed a week ago that my viscous fan clutch was definitely not acting viscous anymore. That tell tale roar full time in normal driving. Sure enough, locked up solid.

Went to order up a replacement and noted the redesigned replacement meant ordering new fan too. A no brainer, but intriguing.

Well, the new goodies showed up today, and holy cooling, Batman, what a design difference. Swapping the assembly took maybe 10 min all in, so I probably doubled that by taking a couple of pics.

FYI these are Behr parts if any readers are interested. About 2 bills for the 2 pieces from Pelican.

Oh, and in a moment of irreverence to the manufacturer, I used my handy dandy GM Performance Parts 1 1/4 wrench.(I know, seriously?). Hell, I dunno who makes the tool, but yeah, there ya go.

I think if I had seen what the redesigned parts were, I'd have replaced the fan regardless of the fan clutch failure.

Word.

That is interesting. I wonder how the fan compares. I just replaced the clutch and not the fan assembly as mine was still in good shape

Ricky Bobby will become famous soon enough
^Me as well. The fan does look beefier/improved though, I replaced the fan clutch 3.5 years ago

Hmm, I had no idea,. I converted mine recently to an electric fan with a temp relay. How did the new fan feel compared to the old? Was it more flimsy since it has the ring all around connecting the blades?

I think the revised part is only for the V8 motors.

Not flimsy.

If you look carefully at the pic, you can see spots on the old fan at the tips where the plastic has chipped. Glad I did this.

JCP240Z is correct, this is an updated fan for the E53 with the V-8. Fan is BMW 17 41 7 504 732 and depending on the production date of your X5, it would require the later fan clutch. Both fan versions are 11 blade and 420 mm diameter.

Check YOUR car's VIN to know what fan clutch you presently have on your car.

My (diesel M57) car has a 7 blade and 420 mm diameter fan. No cooling issues but I'll be looking to see if / how mine could be updated to have more flow for hot days and/or heavy A/C use.
