According to the video below (on Valeo alternator), the worn slip ring is shown at time 3:10:

At 170K, it may appear a bit worn, but you should be fine.
Use emery cloth and smooth it out a bit before you install the new VR.

However, please post a photo of the worn slip ring...

BTW, use only quality VR, there are a lot of junk out there.

On a diff topic, I wonder if one can install the VR in situ (without removing the alternator from the car)?

PS: Please post feedback re VR brand and the final outcome.
I would use Crocus cloth instead of emery cloth. I use to be able to buy it at my local True Value Hardware store but ever since they built a "Home Repo" big box store in the neighborhood, it just put them put of business.

As I mentioned in the youtube video above, the worn slip ring can be smoothed out.

On the other hand, you may want to do some search on the Valeo slip rings, they are available on ebay for cheap. You may want to buy it and store in your garage for emergency.

The new VR I'll be putting in is Valeo brand.

Photos attached. Yes, the slip rings cleaned up far more nicely than I expected.

Before cleaning, they were 0.562" and 0.512" diameter. After cleaning with a scotchbrite-type cloth, the doubtful one was nice and shiny, smooth and down to 0.510".

I fully expect no problems. Confirmed the bearings feel/sound great, but I was so inspired by those videos that I went and bought the rebuild kit offered there:

New Repair Kit for Valeo Alternator Fits All from 2000 Bearing Brushes Slipring | eBay

I emailed to check on the bearing brands and the answer was that they were "Genuine NSK or NTN, depends what we have in stock. We dont use cheap Chinese bearings." Sounds good to me.

I will keep the kit in my garage until the next time I've got the alternator out, and will do the rebuild at that time. It's amazing what that guy in the videos can do with a 1/2" wide 2MW soldering iron and Civil-war-era screwdrivers. I should have no problems with my Granddad's WWII-era tool collection.

I know I'm not done yet, but I am SO glad I did the research and got the help from here, vs. if I had bought a repainted one. Even the "New" Valeo brand ones have had problems reported (whining).

Re ebay kit sold for 17 Euros, I am surprised they include the bearings and slip ring and all that stuff for that price.
A good bearing alone is $20.
Anyway, when you get the bearings, please post.

I think you are better off with the factory bearings b/c they last past 200K miles. They are usually Koyo or Nachi type.

Quick update ... other things delayed me, but I installed the new VR just now and everything is perfect again.

Regarding the bearings, I hear you, but I do think it is economically possible for NSK, SKY, Koyo, etc. to make these bearings for a low enough price to be in the kit.

Also there are a couple of other ebay ads for almost exactly the same kit, for about the same price, where the NSK is shown in the photographs, description, etc. I ended up buying the kit I chose because it's actually sold by the guy in the videos and I wanted him to benefit from my business. He's also the one who responded directly about the bearings brands.

I'll follow up once the kit is in hand.

Nice updates and thanks for sharing. Me and wife both have 2001 x5 bought used this year (128 & 108k miles) and prepping for any failure.

I recently rebuilt a fan motor for a brother: the commutator was only crimped no solder and Manu of the windings were no longer connected. I cleaned it, soldered the wires and it ran like a top.

Re VALEO Voltage Regulato for your 2001 X5 M54 120A Alternator Type:
- Could you post the exact PN?
- Place purchased from (and price)?

PS: Mine is 2006 X5 M54, VALEO SG14B020, I wonder if the "2001 X5 VALEO VR" works for mine.

Thanks!
