weird whistling noise

I did a search and not really getting anywhere so I figured I'd post here.

01 3.0 x5. I have no codes. also, when its above 50 degrees or so outside, this does not happen. also, it does not happen once the car is warmed up.

basically I'll get in and crank up the x5 for the first time. idles/sounds just fine. put it in gear and get going. once I get to about 15~20mph and not under hard acceleration, I hear a whistling noise. imagine having a referee whistle in your mouth but you're sort of half heartedly blowing on it. thats what this sound is.

let off the gas, it goes away. feather to half into the gas, its there. once I'm over about 30mph it goes away. also, once I get out of the neighborhood and about a mile away at the first good stop light. its gone and done. doesnt come back unless the car is completely cold again and cold outside as well.

no driveability issues. just annoying as heck when you're running around in a quiet neighborhood sounding like you're half stupid playing with a referee whistle lol.

any clues at all?

How do you make a whistling sound? By blowing air across a Small opening. When it is cold, stuff tends to shrink except for water and milk. Something is shrinking enough when it is cold outside that it creates an opening that is allowing air to pass through it. Once the engine is warm, the item that shrunk expands so the small opening is no longer there. I would suggest that you look at all the hose clamps in the intake system and give them a turn to tighten them.

^I had a whistling problem at one time and the DISA flap was indeed trashed. My intake boot was also torn. Replaced all of those at the same time so I'm not sure which was causing the whistling, it was gone after I replaced all that stuff.

What they said above. You need to check the rubber intake boot as well as the DISA valve.

The parts that usually break is number 8. Number 8 is called the intake boot.
