shifting sound from stopped position into any gear

Hi guy,
my 2005 4.4 makes a high pitched "torquing up" sound when I shift, while in a stopped position, from P to R or D.
Since I am not moving yet, could this rule out the chain (chain stretch) as a problem and be related only to the transfer case/drive shaft splines?
see my video for sounds.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uy1ml3U3Vc4

thanks guys

I have that same sound. Been that way for 6000+ miles and who knows how long before I got it. Keep us updated as to what you find.

I got under the truck and poked around but didn't spend a ton of time on it. Was looking for something loose as it sounds like a loose metallic noise rather than chain noise to me. I found a loose heat shield but it was not the source. Need to get it on jack stands, get under it, and try to isolate the noise... I've just read weird things about how the X drive doesn't like being air born in gear. Any truth to that?

Crystalworks, No BMW likes to be off the ground and in gear while the traction control is in place. it starts making the wheels stutter a LOT while in the air and shakes the vehicle. Not good. So just turn off the traction control.

I'm also wondering if its the guibo...

Yes, i was going to say - did you check your flex discs? It could be possible that rubber had deteriorated and once loaded, they making screeching sound from being mushed/sqwooshed

Thanks for the info guys. Sorry, yes I would turn DSC off before shifting into gear. I just wanted to make sure there wouldn't be any other weirdness.

Also, forgot to mention... I did check the flex discs when the vehicle was in the air. All looked good to me from what I could see. No signs of cracking.

So, I got my X5 back today and it seems as tho the problem is gone. the solution, in my case, was the rear drive shaft with U joint. U joint was sloopy apparently and the expansion portion of the driveshaft was the most problematic portion apparently. I like having that high pitched ting ting ting ting sound gone.

Good to know, thanks for posting. I have not had a chance to get under mine as of yet but the driveshafts will be the first thing I check.

Driveshaft. Had same when I got mine. Drop shaft, pull that joint apart, lube it and re-assemble. The guy I bought it from arranged to have shop do it as part of the sale. I watched the guy do it. Required exhaust drop.

All it requires is lube? That's even better news... minus dropping the back of the exhaust. But hey, for almost $0 I'm not complaining.

I know no parts were required. I was outside on the phone when he did the lube but that was it.
