Pump oil extractor

What do you guys think about this?

That certainely makes the oil change quicker and cleaner rather than draining it from the oil plug. Are these pumps strong enough to vaccum everything?

Slow way to do it. I used one for my lawn tractor. Took for ever to lift the oil.

Great tool for boats with inboard and I/O gasoline engines, since there is usually no other way to get the oil out.

I wouldn't use one in a vehicle if I had a way of draining it normally. Not sure if it will get everything out (and when I do it myself I leave it to drain for awhile, since I have other things to fiddle with). I also like to inspect the magnetic drain plugs on those vehicles that have them.

if you are going to get one, get the mityvac from www.thetoolwarehouse.net (best price on it around).

I've used it on the X5 and it pulled more oil then the traditional drain from the oil pan.

I rotate between the extractor and the vacuum for oil changes.

I say the conventional way is a better way, that is draining it from the bottom, since you want to get any debris, if any, out of the eng.

Is there a trick that I should follow? I bought griot's garage's oil extractor and used it 4 times. Every time I could only get 7 quarts out, while gravity draining always gave me 8 quarts plus out. Thanks for your info in advance.

I stuff a paper shop towel into the oil stick pipe where the hose of the vacuum extractor is to make as air tight a connection as possible. perhaps thats why it works a bit better for me? I also stuff that hose down as far as it will go...

the other theory that i've heard is that the mityvac is one of the stronger vacuums out there... i haven't tried any other system so i can't comment on that.

It is because the container only holds 7 on the GG version. There is a version that holds 9.5 Q if memory recalls.

Personally, between cleaning the suction tube, pouring out the oil into a oil pan, etc....I find it easier & faster to just crawl underneath, loosen the bolt and let it drain into a oil pan.

I come back to the car, change the filter, etc and then put a new crush washer/bolt and fill oil. It's relatively painless and seems like it's less work since I will need pour the oil into a pan to transport it o throw out the old oil.

No jacks, nothing needed - plenty of room undernath to crawl and do my thing..pre 04 models though.

ah thats it! good point! as the canister fills, you lose vacuum power... my mityvac is 9.5 quarts so it may have a little more power at the end to suck up the extra...

fwiw, it takes the same amount of time to do either... one, you unbolt and let it drain itself, the other you pump the handle until you don't have any left...

I was aware of GG's extractor only holding 7 Qts, but after dumping out oil from extractor a second seesion could not extract enough to make up 8 Qts. I may need to try mityvac. Which model of mityvac do you have? Thanks again.
