I have had a few problems with the cooling system. I think it started with the cap leaking a small amount of coolant over a period of time. When the cap lets out coolant or in your case the gasket the temp goes up and causes hot spots and failures in other areas of the system. I had several leaks as a result. I do think it is a weak area in the car too much plastic and heat.

I also have a 2000 4.4 so far problems...

Coolant leak in cap/ new tank and hoses as well as plug.
New Transmission computer and new wiring harness
replaced door handles because of scratches (anyone get a fix yet)
need new button on AC controls.. Not sure how to fix this its cracked

Not too bad I guess....
Good luck GE

Here are the relatively small problems I had since I bought the car 5 months ago before this big engine issue:
- Window regulator changed on the driver side
- Central console changed cause the cellular compartment could not be
opened anymore
- The A/C went crazy and I had to get the Final Stage Resistor replaced.
- Door handles scratched on both front doors. I peel the plastic cover myself
and now the handles look even better than when they were new.

They were all fixed under the warranty (pffouu!) with the exception of the door handles which I fixed myself. If it continues that way I will have got an entire new car by the time the 3 years warranty is over :-).
In spite of all these things I still love this car.
