EWS ERROR - NOT STARTING

My 2000 X5 will not start. On diag, I get the error:
STARTER MOTOR BLOCKED DUE TO SELECTOR LEVER

It seems the vehicle will not start because the EWS blocked the vehicle from starting.

I have checked the EGS and errors pop up. Did a diag on those and the result are as shown (YES or NO):
Gearshift Switch L1 - YES
Gearshift Switch L2 - YES
Gearshift Switch L3 - NO
Gearshift Switch L4 - NO

Dont know what to make of it and no dealer nearby

It's no bother. I'm glad to try to help.

I'll have to look at the Gearshift switch wiring diagram before I can comment on the proper codes. I just don't know them.

One thing you can try is putting the gearshifter into neutral (I assume it's an automatic transmission). If it starts in Neutral to is probably the gearshift switch. You'll have to put the key in position one and your foot on the brake before it will come out of park. After you have it in Neutral try to start her.

If she still doesn't start it could be a number of things. Let me know what happens.

From what I'm reading in the wiring diagram it takes the signal from position L2 on the gearshift switch. You should have 12v in both park and in Neutral.

In park it should be
L1 12v
L2 12v
L3 12v
L4 0
L5 0

Have you checked fuse number F105? If it is blown the EWS will not send power to allow the starter to turn.

If you are stuck you can try something. Disconnect the plug from the EWS and jump pin 1 to pin 2 on the plug not the EWS unit. This bypasses the EWS and sends 12v to the starter interupt relay. It still my not start but it should at least crank.

Let me know.

Thanks for your reply. Actually done a lot of troubleshooting myself.

Yes, the fuse is ok. Yes, bypassed the EWS. The engine actually cranks with or without the EWS and even went a step further by running a 12V positive to the relay leading to the kickstarter from the EWS.
Actually had the vehicle previously starting in limp home mode with no particular gear showing. Second kick or third kick aways get it working well. Now I can see that was somehow part of the problem. How do I read the voltages you wrote

What do you mean by "no gear showing." Are you putting it into sport mode and shifting?

The best way to check the Gear selector switch is to disconnect the plug at the switch (on the trans) and check for continuity in the switch. You'll need to look through the wiring diagram but I believe it is pin 4 for the common point then pin 11 for L1, pin 2 for L2, pin 16 for L3, pin 7 for L4 and pin 19 for L5.

I just want to check, your getting the engine to crank with no light off or are you not getting the engine to crank.

If you are getting the engine to crank without starting I suspect the ignition switch. The ignition switch has fixed several starting issues with X5's. In many cases it can be simply cleaned. To do this pull the cover off the steering column (easiest to do with the key in position 1, extend the column all the way out and down). On the opposite side of the column from the key there is a square connector with many wires going into and out of it. Disconnect this connector and spray contact cleaner or even WD-40 into the plug and switch. I found the contacts dirty on mine. I have had to do the above twice. Next time I have any starting problems I will replace the ignition switch.

Any one able to point out which is pin 1 and which is pin 2 on the connector?

Any further info on this? Want to try to get this thing cranked so at least I can avoid the $200 tow to the dealership. Already going to have to shell out a chunk once I get there.

Any help appreciated.

if you look closely at the face of the connector there are normally numbers in the corners or somewhere on the connector indicating the pin
