Angry X5 Pixel Failure - BMWNA offers only 50% toward repair!!!

Hi there - I have a new (to me) '01 X5 with the MID pixel issue. I had read multiple posts on this forum of people with out of warranty X5's with the pixel issue, and BMWNA picked up 100% of the cost of the part, and the owner just pays labor. Which is what I expected.

Well I was told today by Scott of BMWNA in New Jersey that my situation was "reviewed", and BMW will only cover 50% of the part, which is about $800, plus I have to pay labor. So that's $400 plus labor. So much for a goodwill replacement policy!

What does it take for BMW to decide to replace the part 100%??

Is it possible to pick up a used MID display without the pixel problem, and just pay for the labor for installation? There are enough older X5's around in junkyards that I would think the part should be available.

Does anybody have a part # for the MID display so I can search for one?

thanks for any feedback,

Karen in PA

Be careful what BMWNA tells you. Go to your dealer and talk to them and see what they say. BMW NA Customer support has frequently given out bad advice that was just plain wrong. My experience has been that they are staffed by young cocky kids with little actual knowledge. In one case I know of the rear door airbags of a BMW needed to be deactivated due to the use of a child seat and BMW NA customer support rudely said that they wouldn't pay for it. This was 10000% wrong and proven wrong with a BMW service bulletin. The dealer did the work and the person was 100% reimbursed for the cost.

I did this as well - they covered 100% - but they did ask me some questions like if i bought it pre-owned cert, is it my first bmw etc. Is this your first bmw? He said he would submit my answers to the marketing dept and tell me what my cost would be. I think the fact that it's my first bmw helped me.. who knows. call again, when i doubt.. escalate.

if you want to go the ebay route - just ask the seller if he will guarantee no dead pixels. Also - you have to make sure it has the same buttons on the MID as yours does.

good luck.

Karen,

BMW paid 100% for my part, and I paid for 1 hour of labor. What's your mileage, and are you the original owner? Like others above said, try to speak to a different person at BMW NA. I don't think that speaking to the dealer will help, unless you have a good relationship with your service advisor. I was friends with my service advisor before he got his position, and even he couldn't help me much with the problem, as the program seems to require the individual customer (and not the dealer) to take it up with BMW NA.

good thing I didn't end up getting an '04 X5 with pixel problems from a small dealer as well. like you karen, i read that BMW will cover the pixel fix but i guess it varies on each owner's experience.

i ended up getting a CP0 '04 from a BMW dealer and i the minute i got home found problems with it already and made an appointment with the dealer to have it fixed.

1. Pillars on driver side and passenger side were bubbling - REPLACED
2. All 4 door rubber seals ripping - REPLACED
3. Back up lights Error Message in cluster - REPLACED
4. Driver side Brake lights out - REPLACED

So i'm definitely happy that I got an CPO...

welcome and good luck!

I got mine done at JMK Bmw in Springfield, NJ. All they asked for was for 1hr. labor and they already had the work order number since I had called BmwNa beforehand. My X5 had about 75k mls on the clock at the time and I am the third owner.

This is a X5 without warranty, correct? I'm surprised they are paying for anything.
