I have a set of tail lights & Tail gate lights on ebay right now. These are the OEM lights from a 2002. They worked perfect when removed, never had an issue with them. Might be a quick and easy fix for most of you having the problem.

there is a BMW "fix" for this common problem that should only cost 1 hour of labor (per side?) - check earlier posts re: taillights - had my passenger side repaired and have not had another problem with it in over 2 years

Check the contacts on the light bulb holder itself. If they are burnt or broken off already, nothing will make contact. At that point, purchase new bulb holders.

Post pics of your tail lights and maybe we can help you out a bit more.
