Stearing Wheel Controls For Aftermarket Radio

I just upgraded the system in my 2005 X5 with Bluetooth handsfree and the installer stated that there was only one known module to be able to take the Pioneer AVIC Z3's analog connection and get it to work with the digital stearing wheel controls but you can only get it in the UK and they won't ship to the USA.

Is there anyone that makes this module in the USA or sells it? I'm already missing the steering wheel controls.

I'll post pics of the job later.

What installer told you this?

I've thrown AVIC's into many BMW's and retained factory steering wheel controls.

The part you're looking for is made by PAC. The part number is SWI-PS. This part can be found all over ebay and other audio retailers that carry PAC products. The actual company is out in Santa Ana, CA last time I remembered.

You can check their website at : http://www.pac-audio.com/

For all of you that want use of an aftermarket stereo but do not want to loose your steering wheel control functions, now you can have the best of both worlds....

I am so happy because I installed my Alpine IVA-D901 in my E53 X5 along with the Peripheral SWI-AKJC Steering Wheel Audio Control Interface, and I have full use of my steering wheel controls. It was a simple three wire installation, (power, ground and signal), then a matter of programming the commands. I programmed the volume buttons for volume, up and down for previous and next track, and tel button for mute and the R/T button (one they said is unprogrammable) to switch source. All buttons work like a charm even with my iPod.

Paid $50 for it from eBay. Just do a search on Peripheral SWI-AKJC. I found it from doing a search on BMW e53 and took a chance with it. If I remember correctly your e39 and the M3 e46 with the sport package has the exact same steering wheel.

Just re-read your post and noticed you have a Pioneer deck, so you will need the part PESWIX

Thanks Charlie and Silver. The installer stated that there were only 3 models that this was an issue on and that was the X5, the X3, and the 7 series that have the interated Bluetooth handsfree.

They stated that this was because the Pioneer deck is analog and the BMW models with the integrated Bluetooth have digital controls.

So they said that they could just hardwire the controls to make them work but then it wouldn't be able to be put back to stock in the future or they could try to get this module in the UK that would allow them to tie it in without any problem. But the company in the UK that makes them doesn't ship to the USA.

I've e-mailed PAC to make sure their module will work for this version of the X5.

Charlie have you installed an after market head unit in an X5 with the factory bluetooth integrated and been able to use the steering wheel controls?

with the unit I posted you only hook up three wires, power, ground and signal from steering wheel. you are correct that there is a issue with these units and the phone system, but if I am correct you do not have the factory system installed because you are installing an aftermarket stereo system???

what all are you taking out? only the deck and having them intergrate it with the BMW system?

Sounds like the the audio installer you are dealing with is not familiar with the PAC or Peripheral moodules.....

OK thanks Silver I'm going to point the installer to the PAC website and see if he can get the unit and we can get this working.

Yeah I'm just trying to keep the bluetooth integration for the X5 so that when I answer or make a call it mutes the radio and then of course be able to use the vol and track steering wheel controls for the new Radio....

So we only took out the radio and CD and put the double din AVIC Z3 in.

Thanks again for the help.

So is your Bluetooth module on your Pioneer deck? Or are you trying to use BMW's bluetooth module? If your are attempting to use the BMW bluetooth module, neither the PAC or Peripheral SW control unit will work, plus I am not certian but I do not believe the BMW bluetooth module will work without the BMW radio??

Thanks again for the info Silver. I was wanting to use the BMW handsfree and just make it so that he radio would mute when I make or receive a call but the Pioneer does have Bluetooth hands free also so looks like I will just have to go that route.

So can I use the Volume, Track, Phone Book, and Handfree buttons with the PAC module and the Pioneer deck?

I could live with that if I could still use the functionality of all of the steering wheel controls. The Pioneer does have voice activation for the hands free so i guess I could even live without the phonebook and handsfree buttons on the steering wheel but I hate having something there right in front of me that I can't use.... :p
