I dug around some more, and found this detailed DIY for the intake Camshaft sensor which is trickier than the exhaust.

The key is the removal of a few pieces in the way of the sensor and the wire leading to the harness.

It fixed my issue. I kept the X5 for another two years and it never came back. If the sensor is malfuctioning it will fix it. If the sensor is working, and the light comes back on, then something is out of position and it needs to be fixed.
