No Reverse - Any ideas

Well I got a call from the wife tonight, she couldn't back the X5 out of the parking lot at work, reverse was just slipping. Two of her co-workers pushed it back and she was able to drive home 20 miles with no problem. When I got home it shifted into reverse, but after sitting for an hour it just slipped again. Drove it 15 miles to the nearest dealer and it is running great in all forward gears and there are no errors on the dash or on the OBDC. Any idea how badly I am screwed - can it be low on fluid? I notice the pan looks like it is leaking..

would help to know what year / engine
there is a plastic ballbearing in the valve block of some transmissions which wears and allows fluid pressure loss causing reverse to slip .
could be easy fix or could have done damage .
i tried to put info here but wont happen so search for thread - 4.4 X5 with 5hp24 problems. that tells everything , even how to diy rebuild transmission

Angry

The dealer wont have time to look at the X5 until tomorrow, but based upon my research I don't have much hope. Below are a few links I have found.. I still can't beleive this is happening with only 70K - I have always been good about changing the fluids in all my cars, and took BMW's advice and never changed the transmission fluid, and look where it got me.

Just heard back from the dealer. The transmission is bad and they want $8600 for a replacement. I have a message in to the service manager to see if there is anything they can do with the cost, if not it is being towed to a local shop who quoted me $3800
