If you do the job consider using Penetrox.
for corrosion protection on the metal parts.
PENETROX A Joint Compound - 8 Oz Bottle Penetrox A
You could use Noalox on all the connections
but Penetrox is a better product. The included
link is for information only. The product can
be purchased at Home depot or an electrical
supplier.

Is it the bulb or the connector? I had a prob where every 50 miles or so the tail light would go out. I had to take the tail light assembly out and take the connector apart and lighty re-crimp the connectors where they slide together from the vehicle harnass to the lens assembly. They had loosened up trom vibration. Also check for corrosion around the opening where the bulb fits into the assembly as it is the connection point. Check the connector

I beleive, with out a doubt, there is nothing mentioned in "your" fix about the possibility of the contact pins in the vehicle harnas connector plug lossening up and needing a snug to maintain proper contact.

Your correct. However 99 out of a 100 problems regarding
the rear lights have to do with corrosion and burnt contacts.

Your experience regarding the possibility of the contact pins in the
vehicle harnass connector plug lossening up and needing a snug to
maintain proper contact is a first for me.

Thanks for the info....

There is something wrong with german engineering on the tail light design. on the new ML it happens exactly the same way it did on my X5. 3 weeks ago, i have to fix both tail lights on the ML and the X5 at the same time. First for ML 2nd time for X5 (different contact point). Easy fix, $7 soldering gun and lead from Radio Shack. Good luck.
