Dear member:
Another member of another website posted the following information. It was really useful to me. mackskibum Senior Member Registered: Jul 2000 Location: Northampton, PA, USA Posts: 163 4.4 Spark Plug Replacement Procedure OK here goes- I searched for this info, and it seemed tough to come by- so here it is for everyone. 1. Turn the 4 hex head screws on the intake cove 1/4 turn and remove cover. 2. Locate the 2 small access covers on each side of the engine (located in the plastic covers that say "BMW" on them. These are square and are about 1"x1", and can be tough to see. You will find a small slot at the lower edge of the cover that a small screwdriver or the like can be used to pry off the covers. 3. Remove the 2 bolts that hold this trim cover in place and remove the covers. You will now see the individual coils at each cylinder. 4. Remove the connector from each coil by raising the connector lock (metal piece- it slides up to release the connector.) 5. Remove the 2 nuts from each coil assembly. You will notice that there are additional ground connections on one coil on each side- remember to return these to their original position. 6. Grab each coil by hand and coax them up and off the spark plug- the whole assembly should come out as a unit. Once these are out, you can access the spark plugs with a 5/8" plug socket. 7. Reassemble. NOTES: Try not to pry on the coils- they can be easily damaged- be patient and they should come out by hand. Do not remove any fasteners from adjacent cylinders with a spark plug out of a hole- a dropped nut will surely find its way down there. Look at the spark plug connectors for any sign of arcing- you may need to replace one or all of them as part of the change. Put a little dab of anti-seize compund on the new plugs to make them easier to remove in the future. Be careful when threading the new plugs in so as to not damage the threads in the head- get it started by hand and do not over-tighten. All in all an easy job, and one last word of advice: Do not wait until 100K to do this- I did, and the center electrode of the original plugs was eroded below or flush with the ceramic insulation at the center of the plug. __________________ Mackskibum aka Dave Austin '66 911 Work In Progress (#303734) '85 911 Carrera '83 F100 redneck special '00 BMW X5 '05 Envoy XL SLT |

Is it due at 65Kmiles for sparkplugs replacement? Where did you purchase your plugs? Dealer? I am interesting to know how are you going to purchase the transmission oil and what brand you are going to use for your X? I know dealer don't sell the transmission oil.

This is a job that having a specific torque value when reinstalling the plugs, would be very important and helpful. Perhaps, someone can chime in if they know..

My X5 4.4 has been sounding a bit 'lumpy' the last few days, power seemed a bit lazy...Turns out that all the spark plugs need to be replaced...they were not firing properly...The car was only in the dealer for it's first service (24k) in January 2006, so I'm not too impressed with them.....I'm using 98RON unleaded...could it be that this is causing the premature wear on the sparkplugs?

According to an older copy of the TIS, spark plug torque is 23 nm +/- 3 nm ungreased.

Damn, my Craftsman torque wrench stops at 35nm which is about 25 foot pounds. Looks like I need a smaller wrench. I am looking at a spark plug change as I approach 60K on my 4.4.

According to the specification on the box each spark plug comes in, the 4.4 spark plug torque is; 30 nm +/- 3. I torqued mine at 28 nm.

I am assuming the same procedure for the 4.6is plugs? My dealer wanted $600 to change the plugs. How much is each plug??

While searching online, I saw them at US$7.99 a piece at AutoZone. Here in Canada, I was able to get them at CAD$10 each.
The only possible difference is the removal of the 2 side covers and the coil connector lock. For my 4.4i N62 engine, the side covers snaps on (no bolts or nuts) and the coil connector lock is slightly different.
