Not sure if this would apply to the X5 or your car specificially...but I had encountered something similar on my E32 (735iL), and it turned out to be a faulty speed sensor.

Gonna guess and say the battery needs to be replaced. You get all kinds of happenings with a week battery, its due anyway if its the OG battery.

It has to be battery, alternator or you have some odd electrical issue going on with your X.

Are your DSC lights on? Brake, ABS? It might be your DSC module for which this happened to me last month and i got it repaired. Before getting my module fixed i got my brake sensor, speed sensors changed but still no avail. So my mechanic told me the DSC module was bad.

I had the same problem with Trans Failsafe Prog and now my car is dead. I have to jump the battery to start the engine. Do I have bad battery or DSC module? Please advise.
