Coolant for my 2005 X5

Coolant is low on my '05 X5 and the dealer insists that I buy the one that is specifically made for BMW from their parts dept. Are there any quality commercial brand that is suitable so that I don't have to make a special trip to the dealer?

For topping off, I can't recommend anything but the OEM coolant from BMW dealer, my dealer charge around $22-24 for a gallon.

For complete flushing you can switch to Zerex G05 if you really hates your dealer, but it price about $20/gallon anyway.

Sometimes if you bought the car new from that dealer they'll just top it off for free, even after waranty is over. Never hurt to call your SA.

I can add Zerex to top off? What if the original coolant is not Zerex?

Yep

You can top off with this. Just mix it 50/50 with distilled water, or if you are just putting in a small amount, dont bother and just top off. You wont upset the ratio to any meaningful degree. It meets the specs of OE coolant.

Be careful about pets getting to the balance of it, the sweet smell and taste will lead to their undoing. It really is only suitable for engines and fortifying cheap french wine.

It doesn't matter, the Zerex and BMW factory coolant are Phosphate Free, which is what's most important. Pick up whichever coolant is closer. I've been serving customers and my own vehicles for years using either one w/o a problem.

Geez, even here in Canada it's only 11 bucks a gallon at Walmart. I changed my X5's coolant to Zerex a couple months ago. Used it in my Powerstroke diesel truck for years. It's good stuff.
