Finally solved the cold start problem by replacing the MAF sensor. A jobber air filter installed by the previous owner of my car did some damage to the MAF. My engine never run as well.

I believe I posted the tolerances. Ask them for the printout of what they measured and do the comparison yourself.

My BMW dealer kept my car overnight and - so they say - did the tests for the intermediate lever/s. They said ONE cyl ( no. 6)was misfiring after cold start up ( my own experience that one cyl misfire on a V8 is hard to detect - when I start up from the cold it idles on about 4 cylinders!). He said that the intermediate lever concerned was "within BMW's tolerance". Whether they checked them all, I do not know. I then remarked that what BMW UK were essentially saying was that on a £55k car (with 34k miles on the clock), it was acceptable for it to shudder and shake on a few cylinders when starting from cold. They said that was basically BMW's stance. He said that even if it had been only a few weeks old it would not have been covered by BMW's new car warranty. As BMW said that the lever was within their tolerance range, my aftermarket warranty company (Warranty Direct) obviously declined to cover it. Has anyone else in the UK had the intermediate levers problem? We need to get together to lobby BMW UK. BMW USA seem to have a better grip on the situation over there.

I was having the exact same symtoms with my 4.4 2006, and I had the levels replaced but didn't fix my issue, the mass air flow sensor was the problem in my case.

I've read somewhere that there is no DISA unit in a 4.4 (V8), true?

I can't wait for the photos.

mikem0re I hereby nominate you for photos of the year. Very very very interesting stuff. Now we need to reverse engineer what the hell they exactly did, but this is way above and beyond the recommendations on the SIB.

If your acoustic cover is back on then don't worry about it, however if it is still off then would you mind snapping a few more photos showing just where the wire starts and finishes including shots of the label on the wire. Also is that wire going to the part labeled heater? It's a little hard to tell in the photos. It would be ideal if you could remove the CCV valve from the cover and photograph it from all angles and show what that heater looks like, etc. Also a couple of wide shots would be great too, showing the differences between the two sides of the engine.

Great job again. Thanks.

Um, it's not just a cold idle problem. You loose power and performance but you prob haven't really notice. After the fix my car was getting 2-3mpgs better than before the fix. The car definitely had more pep in it's step. if you can take them up on the offer. The parts alone are 3k retail so you're still coming out ahead. Also, it only gets worse over time so better to fix it now than later.
