Starting Problems 4.8is

Hoping I can get some help here.....a year of headaches and lots of $$$ at the dealer hasn't helped.

My wifes 2004 4.8is occassionally won't start. There is plenty of cranking power it just seems to 'choke' as if it is barely catching...when the cranking stops, it idles at what seems like 200rpm then dies. If she waits 1-2 hours, it fires up perfectly.

It only happens in the winter but not when it's extremly cold.
It's never happend while parked outside.
It only evers happens after it's been parked for 2-3 hours.
There is no fine line of starting or not, it either starts perfectly or not at all.

We've changed the battery, installed the 'freeze up kit', and done service II. I don't know what else to do...the dealer can't replicate it and if they blame on the battery one more time...I'm gonna snap.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I would search on "intermediate levers" and also checkout the starter. I'll see if I can find the specific thread I read about the starter that seems similar to yours.

EDIT: Sorry it was different from yours. That one was because of some loose bushing or something on the started that needed to be tightened (in order to cacth the flywheel more) but doesn't sound like your problem.

Isn't our X supposed to turn the switch then automatically keeps cranking to catch by itself? Like we don't have to hold the key turned. So, I wonder if it might be a problem in the ignition assembly in the steering column? Sorry can't be more helpful.

The intermediate lever kinda sounds different since you say happens in winter but NOT in extreme cold and not outside. Weird.

I did some reading on the intermediate lever problems....the difference for us there is no fault codes and the vehicle never actually starts.

Yes, on our X5 turning the key is the equivalent to pushing a button. It continues to crank until it times out....while it's cranking there is alot of vibrations...when the cranking stops, the engines dies a few seconds later.

Hi alano

A quick introduction first. I am a 2005 4.8is owner living in the UK. I bought my car as an approved used car from a BMW dealer in London. I have had various problems with the car that have been fixed under the warranty but this one is the most worrying. I’ve lost a lot of confidence in the car……Not knowing if it was going to start or not.

You are not alone with your starting problems. I too have recently experienced the same problems of intermittent starting but with what appears plenty of cranking power. Mind you mine never started. It also only occured when the weather is cold as well. I have had my car 9 months now and nothing like this happened in the warmer months.

In the end the car was transported to a dealer where their diagnostics determined that a new battery was required. Although enough charge to turn starter motor over, not enough to power all other auxiliary circuits…..(I know that’s what you don’t want to hear)

I have only just got the car back so it’s difficult to know if it has solved the problem. I am still not 100% sure.

I have posted my experience on the X5drivers.co.uk site. You will also find that another 4.8is forum member has had the same problem as well.

Ricko

Theses are symptoms of leaking fuel injectors. But it could also be DME software related. If you are still under 80K miles, the repair should be covered under the FED emissions warranty. There was a Software error in the DME that causes hard starting after vehicle heat soak for early X5 N62 Engines. The bullitin no longer exists in the BMW online database. You must ask the dealer as they may not be familar with the bullitin. If the DME software is up to date, remove the fuel rail, and check the injectors for leaks.

Okay so I took that info to my dealer.... they told me that if I leaking fuel injectors I would smell fuel.....which I don't.

They are going to 'try' a few other things...

Ignition Switch
Fuel Pump Relay
DME Relay

Do any of these sound promising? It's all at my expense.

If that doesn't work, they will try to update the DME and replace the fuel pump.

No updates....same issue every winter. -10 or lower outside, park in a garage or parkade for 1 - 2 hours, won't start or will barely start. Almost like it's choking. Wait another hour, starts perfectly.

Had it into the dealer several times.

Since I have the same issues ill post my solutions I have tried as well. So far I have replaced the ignition switch, fuel filter and crank position sensor. once when it was on its no starting fits,I unplugged the maf to see it it were that, but still no start. My battery voltage was a healthy 12.6 v pre crank and 10.6 during cranking like normal, so it doesn't seem to be that. My battery is only 6 month old too.

I have the exact same symptoms as everyone else here with my 05 4.8.

My next approach is check the relays, look up the dme software and see if I need the upgrade, and check or replace the spark plugs. Then I'll look into cam sensors, fuel pump and new alternator.
