Well,If the E70 3.0D has "them straight out the rear"...why cant E53 3.0D owners have the same?
As far as the smoking black filth you mention,no one sees any black smoke coming out of mine!Could it be the DPF doing its job!

the E70 has a diesel particle filter but I don`t think the E53 has one
that would explain why the E70 exhausts can exit straight out the rear .
you may be cleaning soot from the rear of your car from now on .
how do you know no one sees smoke from the rear ? . all diesels smoke .

You dont think it has one!Fact is, all 2003+ E53 ,like mine have DPF.
I shouldnt have to put this here because you should know
RealOEM.com BMW E53 X5 3.0d Catalyser/Diesel particulate filter

You will not see any soot on a Diesel exhaust with DPF,so thats how I know no one sees smoke from the rear!My tips are clean and I never had soot on the rear of my car!
Do your research on DPF first, or even better just follow a later E53 3.0D and check the exhaust emissions for yourself!
If you cant source any info on how DPF works and how it regenerates(burns the soot accummulated in the DPF),I will be only too happy to explain

This is a good example what an E53 3.0D with DPF sounds like with straight through mufflers.
Not V8,of course,but still sounds nice .
Also please note that it doesnt smoke ,even on full throttle....

Hi I modified my exhaust 2 years ago on my 2005 3.0d not by replacing the mufflers but simply removing the blanks, boring the correct size holes (to match the new tips) with a tungsten tip hole saw through the rear of the muffler important to leave the mesh screen inside the muffler so the tip can seat against it to be welded through the tip, make sure stainless tips are used, then cut off the existing tail pipes and use the left over plates from the new holes to weld over the tail pipe holes. I then cut out the blanks leaving 15mm gap around the new tips which looks very neat. There was an instant power increase and at idle only, sounds V8ish. This coupled with an ECU tune (REMAP) 200Kw & 600Nm.Yes there is still a soot issue but no worse than before in fact my BM is white and has stayed cleaner since the mod'. This way definetly works as I mentioned its been 2 years since the work was done ( alot cheeper to )

Yes.its almost plug and play,as all the silencers rubber hangers are in the same position on both 3.0D and 4,8is,thus ensuring that your tailpipes will be straight and even.
6 years ago when I did mine ,I welded ,but there is another option now ,since you can use 63mm(4.8is) to 51mm(3.0D) pipe connectors,so you will just need to cut the 3.OD exhaust pipes and the 4.8is silencers pipes to connect and its all done.
I would then advise you on a remap to take even more advantage of your now ,more free flowing exhaust, and you see an easy and reliable 270bhp /600Nms.(wouldnt go more than this as you have a plastic inlet manifold,a fragile exhaust manifold and more important, the transmission will cope nicely with "just" 600 Nms.
I dont know what part of the country you are,but if you can get to Stroud,Glos,..my coleague Dan Turner race developments south west UK car tuning company has years of experience of this type of work and remaps.

Sounds very interesting work and a good alternative.
Do you have any pics or can you take some of the tips and also from under the silencers so we can all share..

Diesel muffler modifications to twins,

Here are some pics of the mod I did on my diesel 2005 mufflers, the process took 1.5hours and cost $ 300 AUST which is far cheaper and I dont know if the 4.8 mufflers would give any advantage over the original. If anyone is interested in doing the mod I can give some more info on the muffler screen & material inside, which is no big issue.
