Your vehicle is 4wd, or AWD, all of the time. You can't turn it off. The centre differential does not have a separate manual locking control, it automatically locks up the internal clutches to transmit power to the axle with the most traction, starting from a baseline of approximately 40% of the torque to the front axle, 60% to the rear axle. Hope that helps. If we aren't understanding your question, please elaborate.

From what he wrote I assumed he is looking for locking differentials option.

Hi Jcl, what i ment was that i took the x5 to the rolling road and i witnessed just the rear wheels moving and the front wheels were not. a minute later, all four wheels were working then a minute later just the rear wheels.
i contacted my local bmw garage and they said you have to set it permanently to the 4wd. i want to do this but dont know how to. thanks rahul |

Wow,if the dealer said such a thing,I don't know..Unless there's such a thing as getting it done by programming(I somehow doubt about it) I would really avoid that dealership or service adviser.
Am I wrong? Quote:

But from hearing the dealer's comments, and your description of what happened, I think what they meant is that the dyno rollers have to be set to 4wd (ie, locked together). They are not referring to your vehicle, but rather the dyno. I stand to be corrected, but I think that good awd dynos can be set either locked or floating. Any experts out there? It would probably help to know what type of dyno (rolling road) it was.

jcl, even though the dynos were set to the right settings for my x5 shouldnt make a difference. what i ment was the rear wheels are just operating and making my x5 a rear wheel drive instead of a 4wd. however, it does change from 4 wheels to 2 wheels.
