Angry Do I have my transmission broken???

Hello specialists,

I was reading threads about rattling here and vibrations there and was always thinking: poor guys - lucky me - I do not have that problem.

Just came home from an about 1000km drive and I have the following problem with my 2002 3.0d automatic:

I drive in 5th gear about 60 km/h and accelerate (very soft). RPM goes to ~1300 and then it starts RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR. It is a vibration that is felt by everybody in the car. When I accelerate it stops. It seems to be there only between 1300 - 1500 rpm in 5th gear.

Any idea what that could be? I am really afraid that this could mean my tranny is about to die. NOT GOOD !!!!

Hoping for an expert who says: take it easy - easy fix ........ !?!

Thanks, Helmuth

From your description I would guess TC chain or output splines....?

Just trying to understand ..... would that chain or spline vibration really happen with one gear and one rpm only?

For the output spline I believe not, for the chain ... ? Maybe I do not really understand the whole system.

Hard to say. It is hard to diagnose without some more info. As I said, it is a guess.

If the drive train to the front axle disconnects (i.e. the splines or the chain skip) your revs would go up as you loose drive. This caused by central diff.

Maybe I should have said that before - no change in performance of the car. Still drives like hell. But not in "D" from 65 to 75 km/h ... strange somehow.

I would be looking to the transmission more than the transfer case or output shaft. There is more torque when starting off than when cruising in fifth, so transfer case or output shaft problems show up more so then. Also, you say that the vibration stops when you accelerate, and I would expect it to be worse then.

Also check wheel bearings. It appears to only happen at one road speed from your description.

Problem with the converter lock up? Check the fluid level in the transmission as a minimum.

It doesn't really happen with one speed but only in fifth gear with ~1400 rpm.

Hello TriX5, what is a "converter lock up" ?
And: would a low oil level in the transmission not be shown as an error in the display?

Helmuth, sorry about the delay. I am on the road this week and not much time for access to XO. (I could buy you a beer if you happen to be in Vancouver tomorrow? :-)

The torq converter has a clutch in it that bridges the turbine and if locked it becomes a fixed link between the engine and the gearbox thus eliminating the slippage in the TC. It locks under certain conditions and is regulated/controlled by the transmision. I am not an expert on this and I do not know what failure mode the diesel torq converter has as it might be different from the V8. (in my V8 the torque converter had a failed bearing)

I don't think there is a level sensor for the transmission fluid. Not sure if the diesel transmission has a dip stick or is like the V8 auto and needs to be checked under the vehicle.... Maybe Phil can pitch in?
