Not accepting defeat (Smoking on extended idle issue)

*I'm sure this has been mentioned before but I wanted to share my experience

Since I bought my 4.8iS I have had the same issue many owners here experience with smoking on extended idle.

A quick background on my car specifically to give you guys insight into why I refused to believe the valve stem seals were bad:

- I bought the car from a guy who owned six or seven other somewhat rare and collectible cars. He went CRAZY with maintenance on the car and gave me over $30,000 in receipts from BMW on stuff which he replaced over the last 30k miles. One of the biggest repairs (besides replacing the transmission and transfer case) was the intermediate lever repair. The receipt for that repair showed that the heads were removed and mentioned all the things they replaced. The one thing missing was valve stem seals. Knowing what I know about engines and repairs I refused to believe that the dealer would of pulled heads and replaced the eccentric shafts but not pop new seals in.

Nevertheless as I've driven the smoking has gotten worse. Oil consumption hasn't been bad at all but the smoke has gotten unbearable and I was starting to lose faith. I decided to try one last thing (with some reassurance from a thread I saw on bimmerfest) and perform the CCV update on my car.

With that said, I performed the work yesterday when I got home from work. I changed both hoses (with updated insulated BMW hoses) and both valves. The inlet to the intake was FILTHY and gunked up with oil which I cleaned out as much as I could. The hoses weren't brittle but were clogged with oil pretty bad. I warmed the car up for about ten minutes and it blew out quite a bit of smoke (left over) but after driving it around lightly last night and beating on it REALLY hard this morning I can happily say I think I conquered the problem (hope I didn't jinx that).

Part #'s I used:
11 61 7 547 186 x1
11 61 7 547 185 x1
11 12 7 547 058 x2

Labor Time: 10 minutes

Powerfoam works really well for getting oil and crud off engine covers FYI:

Next on the list is sea-foaming the car this weekend.

I wouldn't use seafoam, its basically running naptha through your engine. Why not try a bottle of BG engine flush additive or something similar, or doing successive quick hot oil changes? Should get most of the gunk out.

I've used seafoam on every car i've owned for the last two years. I seafoamed both my e38s and e39s. I used to be nervous considering some of the ingredients but it has always worked for me. I performed an engine flush when I first bought the car and run a can of jectron FI cleaner every couple fill ups.

Edit: Just realized you keep talking about engine. I'm talking about seafoaming the intake using the engines vacum not doing anything with engine internals. I'm all set with pouring seafoam into the oil.

Ahhh I gotcha, yes I thought you were pouring a bottle of seafoam into the oil. As far as the intake tract goes, never tried it but let us know the results, I've read it might be good practice to replace the plugs afterwards (carbon particles get released and can foul up the plugs?)

Plugs and valve cover gaskets were done 2k ago. Hope they're fine...

The parts department at most dealerships is very tight with inventory. If the part leaves in the hand of a technician, it goes on a repair order and someone pays.
But, I hope you fixed it, time will tell.
