Electrical Fan Control Unit Error Code
I managed to doink a number of electrical items by allowing the battery cables to cross terminals while I was installing my new Deka battery (i.e., polarity was reversed). I have resolved almost all of the electrical carnage, so far limited to 6 fuses, except for my driver's door mirror inoperable and my electric fan is inoperable. I'm getting 14.x volts to the battery with the X running, so my alternator appears ok. Electric fan does not run. The 2005 X5 4.4i only has the electrical cooling fan (no mechanical one or aux fan). AC light lights up on the hvac control unit and the havc fan runs fine, so I don't believe it is the final stage resistor. My peak code reader gave me an "e-fan, control" error code (Table 22, 2efe) which I assume means something is up with the electric fan or the control module itself. Bentley manual says there is a fuse for this box, but I can't find it on the list of fuses. The fuse boxes I've found so far are the passenger rear and glovebox. I haven't found anything else (pulled the rear seat and nothing by the driver's side like Bentley indicates). No fuses were visible in the under hood box, but I may have missed something in the tangle of wires under there. So, what are the trouble-shooting tips here? Where else might a fuse be hiding that controls this system? Thanks for your help. It's been a frustrating couple of weekends for me.

So I found the fuse distribution block in the back with the flat fuses of high amperage ratings.
Is this were the electrical fan control gets its power from? I didn't have time to pull each fuse to check yet...lots of other work needed to get done this weekend that didn't involve the X5.

Guys. I'm dying here. I checked fuse 61 and it is fine. However, I do not get 12v to the fan connector with the engine running and AC on (fan connector disconnected from the fan). All of the distribution block fuses in the back by the battery have 12v to ground on both legs. Same with F61. Just no 12v to ground at the fan connector.
Any ideas. I'm stumped where to look next. Thanks.

Was the fuse you check in the fuse panel behind the glove compartment a red 50 amp fuse? If not locate the red 50 amp fuse and see if it is blown. There's a Spare 50 amp fuse in the fuse box also.

Yep. 50A red fuse. I checked both legs to ground and got 12v. However, at the electrical connector to the electric fan, I get 0v to ground. It should have 12v to ground at all times. Just for kicks I replaced the fuse with a known good one. No joy.
I'll start looking at the wiring harness to see if I can find a problem there. I'm stumped at this point.

Kirk, were you able to throw a temp line to the fan, as we discussed earlier? the fuses in the spare wheel cavity are the master fuses.. there is also an E-Box in the engine bay, next to the windshield washer tank, there are bunch of relays and i think a fuse or two... the WDS claims that there should be a small fan, a la computer fan, but i do not recall seeing one there...
were you able to color match the Rot/Blau wire from fuse 61 to the pin 4 of the fan connector? is it the same wire? |

I took yesterday off. I've been fighting it too long and needed a break to clear my (mostly empty) head.
I did check for 12v to ground on all the fuses in the IVM (the module with the fuses in the e-box). All were good. I have not tore the glove box apart to check on the wire color or trace the wire harness to see if it has an issue. I'll try running separate power to the fan, and jumper the ground and signal wire to the fan and see what happens. Fortunately, I have a spare vehicle, so this is an annoyance and not a big problem. However, it is a major annoyance to me since it was a self induced failure… Thanks for the help!

I think there are two 50 amps circuits in the fuse box. Are you sure you checked the right circuit?

There are four in the fuse box in the glove compartment. I checked them all 12v to ground. All were good on both legs of each of the four fuses.

Update: I haven't done jack squat to the X5 yet. However (comma) a buddy went spelunking in the Bentley manual and thinks he found one more thing to check. The fusible link 107 seems to be inline with the fan, post 50A fuse in the fuse panel.
He's looking at pages ECL-19 and ECE-134. I'll tear into things Friday and see. It makes more sense than a 6mm^2 wire having an open in it (but stranger things have happened…).
