red wire is gone directly to fuse F44
brown wire is ground... the WS/RT - weiss/rot wire is KBus wire, which gets a processed signal... Seat occupancy detection (SBE) A seat mat that changes its resistance as weight load increases is located under the seat cushion of the passenger seat. This change in resistance is evaluated by the electronic seat occupancy control system and determines the status ”seat occupied” or ”seat not occupied”. The result is then passed on to the MRS control unit. Corresponding to this information, in the event of a head-on collision, the control unit can activate the triggering circuits for passenger airbag and passenger belt tensioner if the passenger seat is occupied. essentially, what it means, the changing resistance of the mat has certain range, that resistance range is evaluated by the control system and the result is reported for further consideration in the airbag deployment... so, what you need to do, is either fool the system into believing that the seat is empty or occupied at all the times... i would say, have it "occupied", as in this case the bag will deploy even if there is nobody in the seat, which is better then the bag not deploying and somebody is in the seat... or, source a replacement mat and fix the issue altogether... |

Given the safety requirement of having to have the sensor "read" a passenger being present permanently and the prices for AB replacement in the event of a collision I would think that the extra AB deployment might push the older models into the write-off category. Just something to add to the thought process when trying to decide the efficacy of such a "work-around" as opposed to having the mat replaced.

Bmw will be mailing out a recall notice in January for those of us with 2006 model years to have the problem fixed. There is a separate thread about this that explains it all.
