You just need that strip on the outside of the switch replaced. Moisture gets in there and causes electrical problems. You might also need a new electrical connector if it's corroded.

The upper hatch switch, the one under the roundel, has been known to go bad. Mine did not open on its own but rather it just clacked loudly/actuated when I'd press it. I got it replaced under warranty. If this is indeed your problem, be aware that the switch comes with the upper hatch handle that will have to be painted.

I had mine replaced in my first year of ownership. No problems since.

This is great to hear!
I just noticed that when I got back to my car in a dark & bit shady parking lot, my trunk light was on. Sure enough, though the alarm had been armed, the trunk was unlocked. Oh great! Time for warranty visit.
Thanks!

Thanks guys im going to the stealer next week to have them look at it. I really hope i dont have to do any repainting. My X5 is a 2004 under warranty. If they hAVE TO REPLACE THAT PART THAT HAS TO be repainted will they pay for it to be painted too. It seems to me they should since it is under warranty.

Yes, of course they will paint it. Mine was painted so well that I just assumed that it came painted at the time . It's really no big deal.
