I'm getting ready to pull the machanical fan off my X. Should have my tool soon enough which will be used for the same task on the other car.

I've done it on my E39's and I'm very happy with Spal fan and Spal replay. I'll probably do the same with X5 sometime in the future.
Electric fan conversion almost completed Electric fan conversion completed on 97 BMW 528i

My plan is to remove the fan and close the hood. Nothing really to work out

Mine is this: By removing the clutch fan and relying only on aux fan you basically have only one layer of defense against overheating. Not to mention that aux fan primary role is not to cool the engine but to assist in cooling and for a/c purposes. Also, how about this scenario: You're sitting in traffic and you aux fan craps out. You may have few minutes before engine decides that it had enough. Good luck, regardless.

I want to eliminate the horsepower drain from the mechanical fan.

I wonder if the 04-06 model shroud would fit our M62TU radiator. I'm very interest in this topic.

I have done some research and found many sizes and CFM variations of electric fans. Where I am right now is to remove the fan and shroud and then measure the diameter of the shroud where it connects to the radiator. Then I will find the largest fan with the greatest CFM that will fit inside the existing shroud.
