Battery replaced, but how to place the axial securing clip?

Ditto...the battery hold down should be placed over the top of the battery's "foot" then screwed down...this facilitates holding the battery in place...preventing it from bouncing upward...or moving fore/aft during aggressive driving:
(this is an image of the battery in an e39...but everyone of my BMWs have had the same set-up)
