I "write off" the bottom 1/4 of the fuel tank. Once I reach 1/4, I fill it up.
This is to avoid dealing with "siphon pump" issues and killing the fuel pump prematurely.

Fuel Pump: google Pierburg fuel pump.

Are you saying Pierburg is the original manufacture?
I am only seeing Pierburg pumps for 4+ liter engines. (I have 3.0).
If I can save some bucks I want to change only the pump as I am doing it as preventive on parts that cause a tow. So far I am only seeing pumps listed as "original BMW" sold as kits with the sender.

I mean NO disrespect to your 1/4 tank logic and appreciate your sharing, but I very rarely fill up unless the gas light is lit. I am 160+ miles on my original pump which begs the question on what is "prematurely". Because of your argument and others saying low tank runs the pump hotter I am concerned about my pump quitting out on me soon.

I come from E39, tons of people with "siphon pump" issue as the car gets older.

- The 1/4 tank fill-up: it is just my thing, you don't have to do it, you can run until the light is on, your choice. The only reason I fill up at 1/4 simply b/c I don't want to deal with siphon pump issue.

- All engines (3.0i, 4.4i, 4.6i) use the same fuel pump: PN 16116755043.
Made by Pierburg.

Thanks for the manufactures name-
PN 16116755043 is the part number for the "kit"

From what I am finding, there are 2 Pierburg pump part numbers listed for E53
7.50138.00.0 and 7.22013.57.0
and from my search only UK suppliers for pierburg pumps without the sending unit.

Bosch also makes a pump, part #0986580130, which I think also includes the screen.

the pump fails due to getting hot and running hot for extended periods of time

than when you turn off the ride and fill up your tank, it seizes together and doesn't pump at all

most common failure, I filled up the tank from empty and it wont start

Yes,my advice too is never allow your tank to go under 1/4 if possible and you will be ok.Never replaced a fuel pump on my cars until now.Try to put quality gas too when possible..

I always run my tank from full to "light on" and never experienced a fuel pump failure even in Texas heat. I think the cleanliness of the fuel you're using and staying away from high solvent additives contributes more to fuel pump reliability than not going below a quarter of a tank. I try to use only Shell gasoline.

I'm still on the OE pump in the TX/FL heat (over 185k miles).

Not only do I run it down til the light comes on, I continue to run until I see single digit "miles to empty", I've even had a few times where I traveled several miles with the "0" displayed.

I ALWAYS run Shell, Exxon or VP Racing fuel with 10ozs of Lucas Upper Cyl Lube added (ethanol sucks!!!).
