Staggered wheels for snows?

I have 20" y spokes for the summer, but obviously don't want to run them with snows. So, I have two other sets of wheels I can use.
First set is my old 17" stock wheels from an 04 3.0 x5. They are the 5 double spoke ones.
Other option is a set of e38 m parallels. They are staggered though. 8" front, 9.5" rears. 18".
Only reason I'd consider the mpars is cuz they have a better offset. I hate the stock 17's cuz of how far in the wheel well they are. And I don't want to buy spacers just for winter wheels.
If I run the 17's I'm thinking of using a 255/65/17 tire. I can get hankook ipikes in that size for 150ish each.
If I run the staggered 18's, any recommendations on sizes? I want big, to fill out the openings. I know a thin tire is better in snow, but I'm looking for a combination of snow traction and the desire to fill out the wheel openings. I love how the 315/40/20 looks now, and want to keep a nice high ride height.

I ran the 17s with dedicated snows for several winters; nothing will beat that setup...
They will grip like a mountain goat.
Doesn't look Titz, but it's winter in NH.

I've kept the stock 20 sizes 275 up front and 315 in the back and run snows. I've climbed plenty of hills in deep snow with no issue.

More narrow tires will absolutely do better, but I've never had a problem. Ever.

Tire quality is as important as size IMO.

Wide snows will out perform narrow all seasons, all winter long and you keep the good stout stance look.

Proof only comes from those who run the set up and vouch for it or not.

If in doubt, go with the narrow set up but if you are doing two sets of tires, invest in the quality snows and you will drive circles around everyone. Regardless though, going too fast with any tire in the snow can bite you....

I agree whole heartedly. But I don't want to drop the coin on 20" snows. Nor do I want to ruin the wheels by bathing them in salt for 6 months.
That's why I want a wide stanced, good looking alternative.
A smaller wheel will still look good if it has a massive tire on it IMO.

If the snow is packed down a narrow or wide tire wouldn't matter. a narrower tire is only better better in fresh snow because it cuts threw the snow to get contact with the pavement. A winter tire is always preferred when the temps. get below 40-45 degrees wether it's snowing or not

Well, due to the limited options in snow tire sizes I'm going to run non staggered tires.
The x is getting 4 rear m parallels. 9.5" wide 18" with 265/65/18's.
Then I'll put 4 front wheels on my 7. 8" wide 18" with 235/50/18's.

I hope you're not going to run with the e38's tire sizes mounted to those MPars...if so, xDrive/ABS/DSC may not be happy.

The overal tire size diameters you're giving us (235/50/18 & 265/65/18) are way under (front by approx -6%) and way over (rear by approx +8%) compared to the normal 255/55/18 tire size for the e53.

You may want to run the calculations through a tire size calculator to come up with 18" tires that fit the 8" & 9.5" width of those Style 37 MPars...but stay within 3% (+/-) the recommended overall diameter of the e53 18" tire size.

So I guess my post wasn't clear. The x is getting 4 rear mpars. All of them will have the 265/65 tires. The 235's are going on a e38. So there's 2 full sets of mpars.
Instead of running staggered sets, I'm breaking them up. All rears on the x and all fronts on the 7.
I did run the numbers through a calculator. The 265's are just shy of 2" bigger than the stock 255/55. But still smaller than the staggered 20's I'm currently running.
So I'll be fine for clearance. And the 235's I'm running on the 7 are stock front sizes. So no worries there.

Thanks for clearing that up...just didn't want you to run into issues.
