Anything is possible, but hoping that it just a low fluid situation that is causing the problem is just that wishful hoping.

A low fluid situation will be more of a problem when the trans is cold because ATF expand with heat so the low fluid will be more of an issue when you first start to drive the X, not after 15 minutes of driving.

SO... i have an update... i have been using the x the for short trips and tonight i tryed somthing. once the car heated up, sliped, and went in to fail safe mode i tured it off and restarted it. then put in in manual and in 1st gear. i drove up and down the streets flooring it in 1st gear and NO slips. I locked it in 2ed and floored it and no slips... same with 3rd no slips.... so is it possoble that its not the needle bearing

The A-clutch is used in gears 1 to 4. If the axial needle bearing had failed and the O-ring had split then you wouldn’t be able to drive in any gear other than 5th or reverse once the fluid was hot, no matter whether the gear was selected automatically or manually.

I would suggest that you have the code read when the trans goes into failure mode. Once you get the trouble code(s) you can go to this website and determine what the problem is.

http://www.trnw.net/z-search/ZF5HP24.php

A Clutch failure info.

Could also be a worn valve body with a leaky valve.

I have a similar issues, I rebuilt my whole transmission which originally had a failed f piston, I have done this in the past on other 5hp24's of mine but when I did this one on my current x5, I loose reverse when the transmission gets hot and then engages quite abruptly, and I have a harsh downshift from 2-1 coming to a stop. When cold or warm fine, but when hot after 30+min of highway or hard driving these symptoms come up again, park it and after it cools for a bit fine again.

I bought a replacement valve body (with replacement solenoids) and also bought and installed the "Transgo ZF 5HP24 Pressure Regulator Repair Kit" I also thought it was perhaps a bad trans pump so I bought another used one, however when I opened mine up, it looked fine, installed the new(used) one anyway! I thought it was the flow bypass valve from the pump, replaced it. Replaced everything again, and with help from RRPhil managed to point out the support bush o rings at the d/e drum, replaced the o-rings again, checked the axial bearing, check the axial play, clutch clearance. Bench tested perfect (of course cold) Suffice it to say I am stumped, and a bit frustrated. lol

My point was, it could be a lot of things, don't replace parts like I did unless you know for sure! I still don't!

Regards,
Frank

Did you ever connect it to a scanning software when the trans was Hot to determine what the temp was? Could be the temp sensor in the wiring harness or could be the thermostat that allows the ATF to enter the ATF cooler.
