Backup camera delay

When I go into reverse the camera appears however, when I go into Drive it takes a while before the camera goes off....like about 1/10 mile...is this normal?

Thanks

Gary

I've got an 08' X5 and it does the same thing, I think this is just how it works.

Once it's turned on it will stay on until you reach a specific speed in D or you push the button.

^^^Or you travel a pre-defined distance forward, regardless of the speed.

... avoids the potential hazard of delay while backing and filling as in a 'Y' turn.

I drove a loaner 2015 loaded X3 the other day and was amazed at the clarity of the back-up display. Then I tuned up my 2012 X5 to nearly the same!

My issue is when I put E70 in reverse it takes ~8sec to activate the camera while in other new cars I have seen they came on within 1-2 sec.

^^^If yours is pre-facelift model, before 2010, it takes really long. If it is 2010-2013 model and has such a delay you have a problem.

I complained to BMW corporate around 2009 about this backup camera issue (super slow and useless at night) and they asked if I had a chance to check it out before purchasing. They basically said you get what you got and offered no resolution. Such crap is what we get I suppose.

Its my wife SUV and she normally start reversing and dont wait for the camera to come live. she was at Home Depot few yrs back and hit the yellow concrete cone they have at loading dock. I ask her how can you miss that marker and she told me she never saw it in the camera, and I told her you never saw it because you never wait for the camera to go live. But I agree so much for German Engineering too much Hype I think.
