4.8 Valve Seals

Hello All,

I have the n62 engine in my 2008 x5 and it has the Valve Seals that are going bad. Lol, just like any of these cars do.

Here is my question:
- is it possible to do this job (with special tools and all) without removing the engine?
- is there a DIY for the e70 platform I overlooked in my search? (I found one for the e53)

Any input will be appreciated. I'm looking to do this project in spring.

Pic just for s!@# and giggles.

Hi,
I have a 2008 4.8 also... how many miles do you "have on the clock" so I'll know when to expect this latest gift from my X5... I'm at 88k.
Wish I didn't like this car so damn much, would make it easy to move to something else, but I just cant find anything else I'd rather have.

From a different forum, but an option for having these done for $2500...

Thanks,

I'd look at this tool set

11-12-7-568-838 Valve Stem Seals | AGA Products

I bought my X5 with 67K on the clock and it smoked back then.
It now has 155K... and guess what...., It's still smoking. lol

But it's not very pronounced so you don't notice.

Here is what you can do to test this:
- start and run car at idle for 2 to 4 minutes
- quickly, press gas pedal all the way to the floor
if you saw blue smoke you are in the same boat I am in.

Long story short, the smoke is only visible when idling for a long time.
Also, as long as you change your oil often you are better off.

If you suspect you have leaking valve seals, you should replace them sooner than later. If you don't, the next issue you will have is plugged secondary air ports which if left plugged for a long time is very difficult to clear.

Currently, my X5 4.8i has 85k miles with no issues. I change the valve seals on my '04 545i at about 125k miles using the AGA tools. It was a very tedious and time consuming repair. I let it go too long and ended up with a plugged secondary air port on the driver's side. AGA's cleaning tool did no good. 3 months of driving with new valve stem seals allowed the oil/carbon build up to burn off and the ports opened up. you might not be so lucky.

After you get to the seals, it takes about 20-30 minutes per seal. So, 32x.41 is 13 hours bending over the fender. Brutal for even the young guys, I bet....sure was for me.

It is my understanding that 2008 and forward do not have the 2ndary air issues as they are designed differently.
