P0300, P0302, P0304, P0306, Engine running rough with little power

Help, please! This 2009 X5 3.0 started running rough last weekend as my wife was on her way to Baton Rouge. Pulled codes when she returned and got the P0300 (general misfire), P0302 (#2 cylinder misfire), P0304 (#4 cylinder misfire), P0306 (#6 cylinder misfire). Also had a stored P0301 (#1 cylinder misfire), but it did not reoccur after I cleared all the codes and rescanned -- the even numbered cylinder codes and the P0300 did all reoccur. The vehicle just has no power, and she really can't drive it without getting a lot of ugly gestures in traffic.

I should mention that I also have a P0442 (small evap system leak) which has been there for several months and will not go away, but has not seemed to affect performance. I replaced the fuel pump months ago in response to that code and other symptoms (related posts elsewhere on this site). That cured the observable symptoms but the code will not clear out. I would of course like to fix that but don't think it is related to my big problem now of the even cylinders misfiring, so I don't want to dwell on that one for now.

I'm sure plugs, coils, etc., are normal suspects, but with it all coming on very suddenly, I don't see where it is likely to be something related to individual cylinders occurring all at once. Ideas would be appreciated!

Plugs replacement is every 60k mls - has this been done and with the correct parts?
Check the coil grounds on the cyl. head cover - try swapping coils from the even to the odd cyls. to see if the misfire follows.

Current mileage is 97,558. I bought in February and don't know if plugs have been replaced. I aim to go ahead and do it, but really, even with the possible mileage on them, does it seem likely it would suddenly skip on half the cylinders, with 3 plugs going out at once?

Good idea about the ground on the head cover. Any tips on exactly where to look for it? Front of head, middle outside, back, etc.? Anything that might help is appreciated!

Anyone know if vacuum leak would signal a misfire DTC, if the plug itself is still firing? Or does a misfire code mean that the plug is absolutely not firing? Knowing this might differentiate the problem between vacuum or ignition system....

Thanks for the brainpower help!

I'm buying a set of NGK Iridium IX plugs. Will see what I can see about grounds and gasket leaks, etc., while I'm digging in there.

Yes, vacuum leaks can and will cause misfires, more often at start up and idle. The I6 is is full of vacuum leak potentials.

Spark plug and coils usually cause problems under heavier load and not at idle.

Freeze Frame data and Fuel Trim info will help sort out if there is a Lean condition and at what RPM and under how much engine load the problem is happening.

Fuel pump could also be a problem as well.

Thanks, jfoj. I do realize vacuum leaks will [I]cause[I] misfires. What I am curious about though is how that plays out with the DTC's. If a vacuum leak causes a cylinder to misfire (or, let's say rather to fail to ignite), but the plug is firing normally, do you still get a code that there is a misfire? And would I not get a code for a vacuum leak?

I have been doing this a long time and the standard P300 and P30X codes do not differentiate between ignition and Lean problem.

But you are RARELY going to have a multiple misfire situation due to coils or spark plugs. Think about it, car ran fine a few days ago, then BOOM, multiple misfires on more than one cylinder and a general misfire code. You do not have multiple coils or spark plugs fail at the same time.

Freeze Frame info helps a lot to figure out what is going on. Coils and plugs have problems under high cylinder pressure conditions, under heavy throttle, not idle or cold start.

Yeh, I'm with you on the idea of it being all too rare that 3 plugs or coils would go out at once. And I don't see a fuel pump problem triggering only the even numbered cylinder codes.

How do I get Freeze Frame data? Is that from the onboard diagnostic, or does it have to be done by a shop?

Freeze Frame data is a standard OBDII data report. Any decent generic OBDII tool that supports Freeze Frame data can gather this. You cannot get this with anything onboard via iDrive.

But for $30 or less you can get your own OBDII scan tool. Smart phone/tablet Apps are very powerful and you need one. It will pay for itself the first time you use it. Keep in mind shops charge $90-$125 for a "computer diagnosis" which is little than just connecting an OBDII tool and searching for codes. About 5 minutes at most, this is not a diagnosis, this is just a basic scan and this allows the mechanics to make more money than lawyers. Neither which are worth what you end up paying them!

No need to guess, get an OBDII App and get the codes read and you will know exactly what is going on.

You want OBDFusion, for the iProducts it is $9.99, for Android is is $3.99. Forget about ANY OTHER App you hear people talking about. OBDFusion is the App you want and they offer the App for both common phone/tablet platforms.

For iProducts you NEED a Wifi adapter, for Android you can use the Bluetooth adapter.

iProducts adapter - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00WPW6BAE/...BWNPO9BZ&psc=1

Android adapter - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00WPW6BAE/...BWNPO9BZ&psc=1

So for the basic OBFusion, you are at $30 or less for iProducts and under $20 for Android. Very worth while once you find out what you can do with these Apps. Do not let the low price fool you, this is a VERY powerful App and has a lot of capabilities.

I have the Innova 3020 OBD2 Tool, which I used to pull the codes. All it does is read codes and erase. Came with very minimal instructions.

OK, I will take your advice and buy the OBDFusion and adapter for my iPhone. I have the old iPhone 4s, though, do you know if it is compatible? It is updated to the latest operating system. This is a brave new world for me -- I've had an iPhone for 2 years now and use it heavily, but haven't loaded a single app on it yet! Yeah, I've got to come into the age! Wonder if I can pick up the adapter locally instead of having to wait for delivery.
