Ozer, I had the extended service as well and dealer did not do the transmission service. Just completed the service at 126,000 miles. Not really a challenging job except the clearance on the last four torx bolts by crossmember. Used 2X4 method to create room as suggested by other forum members and it worked great. Good luck .....

What did I do!?

So I just did a round of maintenance on my 07' X5 4.8L... Engine oil, coolant, brake pads, AND... transmission fluid and filter...

Car jacked up in the air on jack stands and perfectly level front to back, side to side...

Removed the splash shield

drained transmission fluid through plastic drain bolt

removed the old filter

followed the instructions on the new filter, put some fluid on the o-ring on the filler neck. carefully placed the new filter back onto the bottom of the trans and hand tightened the bolts.

Went in the proper sequence of tightening the bolts until everything was fully re-assembled.

using a fluid pump, I used ZF lifeguard fluid until it started to overflow from the fill hole.

tightened the fill bolt. put the wheels back on, dropped her back onto the ground and started her up. Runs fine.

THE PROBLEM - when I put the car in reverse to back it out of the garage, it sits for a second and puts itself back in park. Tried again, happened again...

Try a 3rd time and it stays in reverse.. hmm ok... start to back out of my garage and all of a sudden i hear a loud fast clicking noise. like really loud... like metal smacking together. and the car puts itself back in park. I shut it off.

At this point i"m getting on here to figure out what I F'd up... please give me good news...

UPDATE: Just tried to back it down the driveway again and got to the end of the driveway and reverse isnt working... It's still in reverse but gassing it just revs the engine... WTF... put it back in drive and it goes up the driveway fine but then acts like it slipping as I pull it in the garage.. How did I just destroy my transmission by changing the filter and fluid?

Without reading all the posts ... I did ,,,

I bought a 2007 e70 with 105k miles. I replaced the transmission filter-pan and refilled with BMW atf at about $20+/quart. put the x5 on sloping drive way so level with ramps on the front, measured the fluid out and fluid in when cold. had to stuff about 1.5 quarts more than would overflow the fill point made a little plastic adapter to do that. I took like 5 quarts.

Fluid was clearly dirty and in need of replacement.
My opinion is BMW doesn't care what happens to an X5 after it isn't their dime to fix it. If fact if you costs you a lot to fit with BMW service they are happy.

FYI ... I am presently chasing a battery discharge when my x5 is turned off. The car actually had a dead battery on us as driving ..... when the battery gets low that transmission will make a big metal clunk the display will tell you your 4x4 has failed and tell you to go to bmw service. You would think the transmission had failed .... nope just charge the battery and all is well. Now why doesn't the machine tell you your battery voltage is dangerously low .... instead of having the transmission fail?
$go figure$

I just exceeded 100k miles and am getting close to 101k. I have a pan and filter and am going to change it and the fluid along with the diesel filter before winter comes. Then, I'll hope my front propeller shaft goes out before 120k and I get a new transmission and transfer case.

Did you do the final adjustments of the trans fluid by letting it run a bit while still on jacks up to operating temp then checking fluid level to top off some more? Might still be low....

It needs to be running and in park while you fill it until it flows out of the fill hole. It'll take a few more quarts when you start it up and fill it while running.

I'm at 148K miles with 48K miles since I did my trans oil change and the transmission is as strong as ever. As some here have related a doomsday scenario if you change the filter/fluid, it never happened for me.

Let me just make sure again that I understand.

I drove it around already and it shifts smoother than ever. I still have not filled the trans while it was running though. But I have driven it. After the drive I did check it again though and it was full. adding more fluid immediately resulted in it flowing out.

Even after driving it and checking it (while off) I still need to add more fluid while it is running?

Reading your post and as pointed out by others, it appears YOU DID NOT FOLLOW THE FILL PROCEDURE.

The car must be running AND IN A SPECIFIC TEMP RANGE when you fill ATF until 'it just runs out'. If you did it off, not running, yo uhave too little ATF in the car.

Even if it drives OK now.

Again, it must be running WHILE FILLING.

I borrowed a family members car today to get to work. The X5 is parked and I will do the job CORRECTLY this afternoon. Thank you all for pointing out my mistakes and helping me get back on track. I will be doing this job again in about a week to finish clearing out old fluid.

Important lesson on not rushing through jobs. I was pressed for time and trying to get it done before the weekend was over so that I could get to work on Monday. I thought I was doing the procedure right. Obviously way off. Thanks again all!
