Apparently my model has an issue with the cover cracking with hairline cracks. They checked mine and discovered it in fact is cracked and are going to pull it off tomorrow and replace it and in the process try to determine if water or condensation is getting in. That may be causing the issues. Its a long shot but I guess its something......
I'd be sure to ask if they checked all the connections to the ECU for corrosion too. Even a small amount of corrosion can cause odd electrical issues.

For example, many years ago my wife & I spent a week during a road/camping trip in the Ozarks push starting our 911 every morning, only to have it start right up the rest of the day. Even in the mornings the lights, radio etc. worked fine. It just wouldn't turn over the engine. I worked on it every evening at the camp grounds. I cleaned the battery terminals & cables, check all the wiring to the starter switch and starter. The voltage looked good (even in the mornings). I even replaced the solenoid. All to no avail. After returning home I told my story to a mechanic friend who asked me if I had checked the OTHER end of the ground cable on the battery; the end where it is attached to the frame - DUH. Of course it was corroded just enough that when it was humid the ground connection would not carry the amps required for the starter I cleaned that ground and never had that problem again

Let's hope your solution is as simple

p.s. Thanks for posting the link to the video. It was very instructive and a little scary

Well, I'd like to chime in that our diesel has also had this stalling issue. While it doesn't show up as often as it does for KmanOz with an error message, it has still stalled. The sequence is similar, if not exactly the same. On our occasions, we would be reversing and the car will cut out and shift into neutral. This is a low speed occasion (<5 MPH) and has happened 3 times. Another time, my father switched from Reverse to Drive, ready to go up our driveway and upon acceleration, it also cut out. Again, a low speed occasion, but it can turn into a bigger problem judging by others' experiences.

The last time we brought it in for this problem, our dealership opened another PUMA case with BMWNA. This time, they took a fuel sample from our car, but we haven't heard anything back yet.

Mine does that to by the way, just not in that Video. Another thing it does is while Im traveling it drops power and comes back within a 1sec. The effective result is the car shudders as the engine drops and starts again. This HAS TO BE an electrical/electronic fault somewhere. What happened to BMW build quality I ask ?????

I reported the shudder at last service.. although I called it a jolt ... it's now progressed to the neutral thing .. but does not do it around town.... I only do short runs (30 mins) to and from work during the week... My concern is my warranty runs out in July this year....

@jamesboags

Jolt is probably a better way to describe it Was lost for words at the time.

I am very lucky and have a great guy/dealer looking out for me. He tells me that BMW Australia will often fix things even after the warranty period is over if they know its a known issue. Anyway apart from that the car has been great apart from little silly things.

OK well I have some news. Spoke to dealership today. What they replaced on Friday was the crank sensor. As it turned out, still same problem. He told me today that BMW have suggested that he changes all wiring. Now he wasn't specific but my guess is from Engine Management Unit to crank sensor. If that fails he told me they are going to replace the whole Engine Management Unit. Funnily enough he also mentioned that their technician can create the problem whenever he wants which is very interesting.

Oh and for the record, mine started the same way. A little here and there and then 40 times on a 7km trip which of course is unbearable..
