![]() I have found a couple of local wheel guys / body shops that will paint my 20" 214 wheels. But they need a paint code from me. It has been impossible to find out the Ferric Grey (as used on wheels) paint code from BMW. BMW has produced many greys/grays over the years. Does anyone, pretty familiar with BMW paints, have a suggestion as to what paint code might be closest to this Ferric Grey that's used on the wheels? I've attached some pictures: 1. BMW picture of a X5 21" 215 in Ferric Grey. (I don't think that the wheels look this "silvery" in real life). 2. An xoutpost member's picture of his original Ferric Grey wheel. 3. KYZRSOSE's pictuure of wheel that he had painted by paint matching to Ferric Grey. 4. KYZRSOSE's X5. Mine is also Space Grey with 214 wheels and this is the look that I'm going for (without running boards). Thanks! Brian Last edited by brian5; 03-20-2010 at 10:39 PM. |

Other BMW wheels use a combined process for that 'chrome/silver/smoked' look:
First black is powder coated, THEN a layer of silver is painted on- this is a semi-translucent layer, the about of silver paint determines the color. Then they are clearcoated. This is the process on the E39M5 wheels. There are a few shops that can do this, but pricing is $200 is per. Every 'color' I've seen, as in a 'full color coat' will miss the mark on this look. There is no 'color code'. GL A |

Call up Wheel Collision Center in Bath, PA. I know a couple places on the west coast, but that's it for East. (Google it too, but recognize that they prolly won't have what you are seeking on the website.
You might check out m5board.com and search for wheel refinishers in the E39 forum. Anyone that can do that can do these.... GL A |

No, I was never able to find out the paint code. I worked with alloy wheel repair guy to get something close -- and I'm very happy with it. Mine is definitely a metallic ferric grey -- it actually looks very sharp at dusk.
In another post, KYSRSOSE said the dealer used A80 51-91-0-427-992 on his wheels for Ferric Grey. EDIT: The paint code for Ferric Grey is A80 I am thinking of having my winter wheels done right now. I've posted pictures before but here's one of my 214 wheel before and after: Last edited by brian5; 01-14-2012 at 06:25 PM. |

i think ferric gray looks awesome... but does it get darker with brake dust just the same? Or does it actually help hide it?

I would say that brake dust is less of a problem. Still have to wash the wheels though
![]() It just looks so much better --- clean or not... |
