Crap!!! Just got a call from the dealer: they found that the engine is slightly leaking oil during quality assurance so they can't deliver it to me today. Should I worry or that happens regularly with new X5?

Welcome to the board! You'll enjoy it here. Oil-no we are not used to seeing leaks.
Cheers,

After discussing the problem with BMW Canada, they came to the conclusion that they should install a whole new engine. To be honest, I don't feel comfortable with that since it's a brand new vehicle. I'm worried this rather major operation could cause other problems. Should I ask the dealer for an entirely new vehicle? Should I ask them to provide some sort of extended warranty free of charge? What would you do? Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't worry too much about it, since the install/labour would be covered under the new car warranty. If problems begin to arise, there's always the lemon laws, although slightly weaker in Canada.

I wouldn't want an engine replacement on a brand new vehicle

Screw that, i'd order a new car....the factory put's hundreds/thousands of engines in on the new car line...the local mechanic 1 per year?

I agree, don't accept an engine replacement before you even take delivery. Order a new one.
