Headrest Retrofit

So I am gonna retrofit the two airline pillows BMW supplied my seats will originally with either comfort headrests or the telescoping ones I have seen. Anyone know which one of these stick out more to support your head? I prefer the 3 series seat makeup where the seat conforms to a full upright sitting position and you can still set your head on the headrest and want that feel in my X5.

Anyone been through this or have any insight? Thanks!

I agree. Don't mean to hi-jack your thread but this is something I'd like to try also. One think I considered: is it possible to switch the headrests? My headrestsadjust upwards and downwards electronically so are they attached at some point within the seat? Or can I simply extend them all the way up until they pop out? I know a number of people complain about how far back the headrests sit. It could be worthwhile pursuing a group.

Yes it is possible, most of the headrests are interchangable (from past 5 series exp) when they are electronically controlled, the only difference in some cases in the plastic guide at the top of the seat itself.

So who has comfort and who has telescoping? Who can speak to both types and what they think?

So after just getting a 535i Sport with Comfort as a loaner for my transmission jerk issue (2nd time in, they are looking to BMW to provide programming this time instead of a flash like the first time). I am really a fan of the comfort headrests in newer models. I have now looked at the parts for the comfort headrest in an 07 (exactly matches mine) and an 11 which hopefully would fit but not sure.

ANYONE try this? Anyone know anything? I am curious if the LCI headrest would fit in a non-LCI seat. The seats look very similar construction wise so I think it is possible but would love to hear from anyone who has retrofitted this.

If you have the comfort headrests on your 07 and want to upgrade to the newer style, you can. I did it. The only thing you need to do is cut the cable so it doesn't dangle inside the seat (since you don't currently have the active headrests).

You'll need to visit your dealer for recoding if your original seats have active headrests (i.e. once you've unplugged the cable and swap for a new headrest, the airbag warning light will stay on permanently)

Interesting, I actually have sport headrests and want to upgrade to the comfort headrest period. But what you are saying is that old comfort will upgrade to new comfort and if that is true then most likely old sport will upgrade to new comfort. Good times!

You will not be able to go from sport to comfort. The diameters are different.

Is it possible to simply purchase the comfort stem(s) base and cover? Swap out those components cause the diagram looks as though the seat back is the same no matter what the headrest type.

That was the 2011 comfort seat, here is the 2007 sport seat:
