Thanks Ard, I hope you're right. As soon as the CEL came on this week I glued myself to your CEL thread... Very informational... Appreciate the feedback and lessons learned.

I can't find any info online for SIB 18 02 10. Any ideas what that might be? I found 18 03 10, which relates to "SES is on due to Faults with a filter in the exhaust system". Not sure how SIB's are numbered, or relate to each other. Found it interesting they performed a SIB for a software upgrade when they say no fault could be found that tripped the CEL.

Uh oh...

Well, had the X back for about 30 miles...

Picked her up this morning and drove to the office (about 15 miles). Got in this afternoon to go home and got the "engine malfunction, reduced power" warning about 5 minutes into the trip. After it came up the 4th time, I may a u-turn and headed straight back to BMW. On the way there, I got the fault another 12 times, and the X went into limp mode once (while on the interstate... great timing). Check Control showed "all systems ok" the whole time.

Once there, i told them I wasn't leaving until they ran the OBD tests and I had copies of the fault codes. So, here they are:
- 4D76: charging air temp sensor - difference, starting value to reference temp too high - one instance
- 4B82: EGR rate control, control deviation - exhaust gas recirculating rate too low/positive control deviation - one instance
- 4C9F: EGR valve, plausibility - mechanically faulty near open position, 243 instances recorded
- 4C9E: EGR valve, plausibility - mechanically faulty near closed position, 243 instances recorded

None of these codes were present yesterday when it was in for the CEL. :

The tech, who did the work yesterday for the CEL, and did the reprogramming per SIB 18 02 10 (still not sure what this is for. The tech said it prescribes a reprogramming for a CEL with no faults present), suspects the new programming is causing today's issues.

I hope this is not the start of long-term issues with this car. We love the vehicle, and just want her back.

Had you seen my lemon thread? Lets hope not... (but it only cost me $1800 to trade my 2010 with 32k miles for the new 2012)

One word pricked up my ears: "no fault present"... just because a code is not 'present' nor 'active' does not mean there should be no CEL.

In other words, issues come up and codes are tripped- and may then go away...but once they trip (depending on the code and the frequency) they WILL set a CEL. So you may go to BMW, they may read 'old' codes, find none present and say "huh, no present codes".

I would be shocked if they have NOT started a PUMA case on your car. For a period of time, EVERY diesel CEL was an immediate PUMA.

Again, sorry to hear- keep track of the days and what they are telling you... make sure you get everything documented in the written work orders and invoices. Codes, what was done, etc, etc

Already brushing up on the lemon laws. Thankfully in TN, it covers all owners (1st, and subsequent) during the factory warranty period. No reason to get worried just yet, as I've had no repeat faults. It seems plausible that the software upgrade created more issues than it solved.

Should have added... "no repeat faults that we know of".

Besides, it's a CPO, with almost 70k miles left on the warranty... So time would seem to be on my side.

Depending on how things evolve, the CEL for "emissions errors" could be considered the "fault"... it does not need to be the same precise code...

While I'd agree that you might suspect the software 'upgrade', there is only tone set of code for your car. I suppose your tech might have screwed up and not properly configured the car, or failed to reprogram certain modules.

But I do not think it is "bad software"...if it were, every car would have issues and a fix would take BMW weeks to fix. Again, I suspect improper programming.

GL!

Fixed?

My wife picked up the Xd today. It was ready Monday, but I told them to keep it until they were sure it was fixed. The service manager drove it home Monday night and last night with no issues. I'm out of town so I don't have the paperwork in front of me, but I know they replaced the charge air temp sensor.

More info tomorrow night when I can review the work order.

Looks like it was the charge air temp sensor. They replaced it with part# 13-62-812-741 after performing several tests on the EGR system (including checking for ground faults, bad fuses, and EGR controller outputs, and Pinot tests between the EGR controller and the DDE module.

Apparently, the EGR controller relies on data from the charge air sensor for proper operation, so when the charge air sensor went, it also started throwing the EGR codes.

She seems to be running fine now. Fingers crossed!

Had CEL come on earlier today, going to dealer tomorrow... 23K miles otherwise trouble-free files. Did have another CEL when car had 2500mi - it was bad intake pipe (had micro cuts in the rubber, perhaps during assembly)...

Will find out tomorrow.

I had CEL over a year ago - dealer 'fixed it' and it stayed off for many months. Came back a couple of months ago - dealer looked again and said it was most likely a temperature sensor but intermmittent (I agree it was intermittent). Eventaully fault came on fully and light would no longer go off by itself. Dealer looked again and found two problems: sensor on a turbocharger and fault fuel filter heater. Both replaced under warranty and fault now clear. Car's performance in very low temperatures is also definitiely improved
