Dreaded N62 (4.8i)Coolant Leak - Merry Christmas
Basically there is a hard pipe that runs front to back in the block under the intake manifold that develops a leak (and it was no small leak in my case) and it's a non-serviceable part. There are a few companies with a less intrusive fix (all german auto) that is still going to set you back $3k plus while you're that far in you might as well get busy with timing covers and a few other bits... Thankfully it appears my extended warranty is going to foot the bill. As a relatively new 4.8i owner I wish I knew a bit more about the possibility of things like this. I still love the vehicle but wow that would/could be a tough pill to take if you are out of pocket. Any ideas on how to force the fail early before warranty runs out might save a few people on here some headaches. |

i thought most BMW V-8 motors suffer from the "valley leak" issue. can't believe it is $14K to fix however. my Indie said it is a PITA to fix but otherwise no big deal.

All Done
Warranty company jacked me around a bit but after all repairs (coolant pipe, timing seals and control arms) I am back in business. Total cost of repairs was $7500.00 ish. I could have done the work myself but warranty covered it so why not...

E70 Coolant Transfer Pipe "Valley Leak".
My E70 with 84K miles has sprung the infamous valley leak in the coolant transfer pipe. $$$$$$$$AAAAAAAAAAHHHHH$$$$$$$$!
I cannot believe BMW doesn't do something about this epidemic (obviously a recall would cost millions). This is my second X5, 1st was a 2005, and the second coolant system problem on both vehicles in under 85K miles. My coolant reservoir had sprung a leak on both trucks as well. What happened to superior German engineering? My teenage beater cars never had as many problems. Sorry to rant and offer nothing constructive to this site, I love my X5, but this just may be my last BMW which is sad because when they work properly... we all know. It's not so much the money but the time spent dealing with all these issues, and dealing with a car maker that doesn't truly back up their product. To those looking to buy a BMW, dump it as soon as the warranty is up. |
