I'll predict the future:

"We fought hard for you and BWM will pay 50%"

(the actual truth will be that BMW is paying 100% but at standard reimbursement rate, so BMW only pays them say $500..they'll get another 412.50 from you.)

I know, such a cynic....

Yes, in hindsight, that was backwards, but not having my car and no loaner available, I focused on getting my car back as quickly as possible feeling my position on BMW paying for the recall rework was solid. As it turned out, BMW paid for 1/2 of the bill which was actually much lower than the original quoted cost. I was out of pocket for less than $200. I pushed for a longer warranty on the work since this current failure occurred at 3 after three years, but was not successful. I feel my dealership put out a good effort in representing me. For a while, I will have to contend with my little voice whispering "pulley bolt".

So, was the welder able to weld an extension on the pulley bolt stub?

Doug, I presume so since I picked up my car yesterday afternoon. All seems good with the car right now.

I hear ya.

By comments were not just to you, but others as they deal with this stuff in the future.

Seems it was relatively painless too.

Recalls

My bolt broke while I was driving yesterday and wow, it is almost impossible to steer. When this happens your water pump, alternator, & power steering is out. Of course then you can't drive far because it'll overheat. My 2011 is being towed 85 miles to Fort Walton Beach BMW tomorrow and BMW USA said they'll go to bat for me to have all costs covered. I was NEVER notified of the recall and only found out about the recall after I did a web search on how to fix it. Also determined there's 2 other recalls for my 2011, 11V-332 which is a belt tensioner weld defect and 11V-521 electric water pump overheating issue. Anyone get a recall notice for either of these 2 recalls?

Check is in the mail....

(But seriously, if it was a recall there is no 'going to bat' needed- perhaps that's why they were so enthusiastic?)

Recall done, bolt broke again.

New member here. Ditto.
2012 x5 35d. 55k miles. Last week, wife called, heard a loud clunk lots of dash lights and arm-strong steering. She got it home right as the overheat lights came on. Pretty cold this week.
Looked around and found the pulley up by the jump-charge post. Bolt sheared clean.
I called BMW Spokane and the recall was done at 13k miles in 2013. BMW policy is 1-and-done on recalls. Called BMW NA, same story. Too bad so sad.
I ordered a new tensioner, idler pulley, both belts and TWO bolts from getBMWparts.

I have everything out except the broken bolt. I dremmeled a slit in the bolt and tried to turn it out with a screwdriver - no joy. Just picked up a set of left hand drill bits and a left extractor. I will try that after work. I really hope I don't have to hire a welder.

Two questions: Does anyone know the torque for the bolt?

And, is there an easy ways to get the A/C belt on without the $300 tool? I thought about an aluminum can over the pulley and lots of soap to slide it on??
Thanks!

Exactly 3 years later, the bolt snapped and all heck broke lose. Dynamic Stability error, Charging error and loss of power assist steering. I was able to get car to dealer for repair. Was quoted $825+ for repair. I let the SA know this issue was subject of a recall and that for a "replacement" bolt to break in 3 years was a major point of concern. They are submitting paperwork to BMW NA. In my instance, the dealer could not extract the remain portion of the bolt and broke their extractor. Today a welder is bringing brought in to attach an extension to the bolt so it can be removed. Fingers crossed nothing is damaged and I get my car back later today.

Anyone else have this recall repair fail on them?

Same thing happened to me at 145K miles but BMWNA covered it for me because the decal was never placed in the door sill indicating the recall was performed.

If I had to replace it myself like you, I would personally use a stud with Loctite instead of the bolt. Once you get the bolt out, measure the total length including the bolt head and contact ARP for a stud to replace it. You'll have to determine the thread count. With an ARP stud there will be much less chance of it loosening like a bolt would and it would hold secure forever.
